Default Ironic

Well, life sure is interesting. Two days ago I was looking at complete engines from Tomei and OS Giken sequential. Was considering something wild and now I have no choice.

Yesterday, while driving to Sunway, my engine went to GTR heaven. From what I can tell, the block is gone and most likely the head.

I'm now stuck between 3 options - get a stock engine from a halfcut somehow, get a local workshop to build a 2.8 engine or get one sent over from Japan.

The first choice is by far the fastest way to get back on the road but stock engine won't last.

The second option would take about 2 months but local workmanship worries me since I'm after more power and I drive hard.

The final option is what I would most likely go for but the 3 months would drive me insane. But the peace of mind is what I'm after.

Those who know me would know how I drive and for this car I'm after a bit more power than before which was just over 500atw. Everyone talks about 1000hp GTRs but I want to be able to drive down to the shops or to work occasionally rather than own a pure track/drag car. I guess 750atw sounds about right to me.

Engines are about 80ish from Japan, box is just under 50 including install. Who should I go to? Should I just try a local workshop instead?

Thanks bros

Err Engine 80ishh.
just engine only or with all the neccesary accessory like turbo ?
since you mention you are after higher hp

local workshop..
local workshop can build it.. but the question is how durable are them .

and tuning .. who do it ?
since tuner is the one who will blown your engine if it not proper build by the mechanic

From what I understand that's what complete engines cost readily assembled from Japan, for example Tomei, etc.

Local workshop, I guess the chances of something going wrong while putting it all together is a lot higher which is something I want to avoid.

As for tuner blowing the engine, I think in this situation it wasn't the tuner that caused the engine cause it did have stock internals and with approximately 520atw or close to 600 at the engine coupled with hard driving regularly, it was a matter of time.

What I want now is to mitigate the risks of this occurring again without having to baby the car.

its looks like money is no problem for you. then i suggest you import the engine from japan. Built by well known workshop like Tomei as you wish, and no question for quality. 3 month may drive you crazy, but still you need a very lasting engine that can last more than 3 months is it? better then half cut quality, better than locally rebuilt, at least....

K_Takuya - Money is an issue for everyone, based on the priorities we have. I'm 24 going on 25 and I had an R33 at 17. I used to moderate SkylinesAustralia when I lived there for 5 years. This may sound pathetic but I don't have kids or anyone who depends on me. Cars have been pretty much my passion since Day 1 and thats where I choose to indulge rather than going clubbing, shopping, etc. This rebuild is going to cost me, but I'd rather do it once and do it right. Sorry for long post, just don't want people thinking I'm Bill Gates or something like that. :)

Edward Chew - Russell and I once asked Nismo Malaysia about an N1 engine and the cost was under RM30k landed but from correspondence with them, it seemed like they were highly reluctant to bring it in. Do you have another contact?

I appreciate all comments thus far and both SAU and GTR UK, although great forums, do lack local relevance to us in terms of pricing, suppliers, etc so this is my only way to know what other Skyline owners think/know.

Thanks!

SS Racing has Tomei engines for sale. Might save you some time from the shipping and handling.

Darkchild - Noted and I'm considering a Genesis but we have yet to take out the engine cause I'm busy at the moment so the extent of the damage remains unknown.

Kaminari - I don't think Tomei needs your original engine in exchange and quite a few people I've spoken to did not mention anything about this. I could be wrong though.

From what I can tell from a very quick survey of the car, the block is as good as gone with a visible hole on the left side. Won't know if the head is gone too but will find out tomorrow - I'm not optimistic so I'm just going to assume the worst and prepare to replace the entire engine.

I guess the only decision that remains is should I trust local workmanship or is the extra money for a Japan built motor worth it. I'm leaning towards Tomei / HKS 2.8s cause I just cannot justify an RB30. Then, turbo selection is another thing I have to make my mind on - twins or single. Currently GT-RS but we'll see.

I'll decide by Thursday latest - now work top priority. If you guys have any suggestions in terms of set-up (stroker/cams/turbo combo, etc), feel free to share. I'll try my best to document the build step by step with pictures where possible to serve as a reference for us all.

Cheers.

Well, I'll leave the actual build to the pros but I do have an idea of what I want. I'm just curious as to which route others would choose if they were in my situation. Hopefully what I have in mind is doable.
