Feedback re 2001 Legacy GT (wagon)

Hi,
Considering a 2001 Legacy GT (wagon) auto twin turbo. The car is in stock condition but it is a little on the sedate side for my liking. However, can any of you advise what kind of modifications I could make to significantly improve its performance safely, while still being able to use it for my daily commute to work?
Any rough indications on pricing for your suggested upgrades would be much appreciated.
Also, does anyone have any experience with the Legacy's 'tiptronic' gearbox? Can it be driven hard?
