Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has unveiled the new Volkswagen Jetta. Since its introduction in 2011, the car has been one of Volkswagen’s most popular models and also one of the most powerful in its class.

The Jetta is offered in multiline options to suit the differing needs and budgets of Volkswagen owners. The multiline option consists of the base Trendline, Comfortline, and the range-topping Highline.

The locally-assembled (CKD) car is available in 4 colours – Candy White, Platinum Grey, Reflex Silver and Deep Black.

Exterior

The new Jetta features new front bumper and rear bumper, redesigned front grille, as well as electrically adjustable, foldable and heated side mirrors with environmental lighting and curb view. However, few equipment can indicate the difference among the three variants.

New Headlights on the Trendline and Comfortline are reflector halogen unit, while the Highline gets bi-xenon with LED daytime running lights as well as LED tail lights. All variants come with front and rear fog lights as standard.

Wheels are 16-inch Sedona-design alloy wheels on the Trendline (replaces the outgoing Navarra-design) and ‘Mambo’-design on Comfortline. The top-of-the-range Highline is equipped with larger 17-inch ‘Queensland’ alloys.

Interior

Inside, the Jetta benefits from an Mk7 Golf-derived steering wheel. Air-conditioning is now a manually-operated unit compared to the Climatronic dual-zone auto system on the outgoing Jetta.

While the Trendline and Comfortline get the same ‘Sienna’ fabric upholstery, the Highline on the other hand feature a more premium black ‘Vienna’ leather.

As for the head unit, it is an RCD 220 system with an SD card slot and a USB port plus 6-speakers on the Trendline.

The Comfortline and Highline however will get an R330G head unit (first appeared on the 2016 Polo), 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity and MirrorLink. Elsewhere, amenities like keyless entry, push start button, cruise control and a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat are exclusive to Highline variant only.

Engine

All models of the new Jetta will be powered by a new 1.4-litre turbocharged direct-injection TSI 4-cylinder engine which produces 148hp and a stonking 250Nm of torque. Compared to the 1.4-litre twincharged unit it replaces, the new powerplant is 10hp down, but packs 10Nm more twisting power.

Keen eyes would notice that there’s an emblem near the right-hand side tail light that says ‘280 TSI’, which indicates that the car uses Volkswagen’s new generation engine producing 250 to 289Nm of torque - but the torque output of the engine varies depending on factors like where the car is marketed, its local regulations and fuel quality.

The engine transfers power to the front axle via a 7-speed dry-clutch DSG transmission. There’s also an auto engine start/stop system with regenerative braking and coasting function as standard across the range to help with fuel economy, which is rated at 5.0 litre per 100km.

Safety

Since safety is paramount to brands like Volkswagen, the new Jetta comes with an array of safety features including 3-point seat belts with belt tensioners, ABS with brake assist (BA), electronic stability control (ESC), brake pad wear indicator, brake pad wipers, ISOFIX child seat anchors, 6 airbags, hill-hold control, speed-sensitive power steering and Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) that performs certain critical functions when the car involved in an accident.

The new Jetta is now available for test drives and bookings at all authorized Volkswagen dealerships.

We're told, customers who purchases the new Jetta or any VW cars from Sept 1 onwards will enjoy a 5-year manufacturer warranty along with a 5-year road assistance service.
