At the age of 30, after being kind of into cars I finally have managed and decided to have a car for trackdays. A non daily driven car just for play purposes(at this point feel old already cant afford to drive manual/racing clutch/hard suspension daily from and to work). Just want to share this and hoped that I will able to get more information and knowledge from anyone with tons of experience regarding on this as I dont have much experience with trackday.

After getting the opportunity to drive my friend's car at Sepang(self-poison), it made me considering to get my own car as driving someone's car might worry me; I dont think I will able to handle feeling guilty if something break and etc. So I have decided that go get one cheap car road legal car(can drive to track without having to tow it there - Im no Dato son).

I think I was lucky another friend of mine is letting go his Satria as he is getting himself a family car. After consulting with a few friends, I decided to get the Satria from my friend. The car comes with stock 4G93 1.8 single cam engine. Im told that it is cheaper to run. Cheap is good! The car is in good running condition.

The Satria!

The car have some minor goodies which I think can be exchanged to some additional $$$ for the other stuff needed. It comes with GAB hi lo suspension, Proton Putra Recaro seats which I think worth mentioning. Other engine related stuff is not much just an aftermarket aluminium radiator.

Have to say goodbye to those recaro. Need extra $$$ for the other stuff.

SOLD!

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/3vul5dcpl/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/3vul5dcpl/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Replacing the seat, I got myself these full bucket seats, as Im big sized guy, only fit in the Recaro Pro2000. The Bride will be on the passenger side(my wife small sized so sure ok one). I was lucky got it these babies quite cheap, and again cheap is good. Only the seats without any rail. Tapau!

During the time I was given the chance to drive my friends car(this car competes in one round of SNF last year-very lightly modded car), surprisingly that the car is quite easy to handle. I mean no uncontrolled oversteer and easy to handle(just my opinion, maybe also because dint push it to the limit).

I have asked my friend if my Satria could have similar handling characteristics of his car, unfortunately the answer is no especially with those GAB suspension. So the idea of not having to spend more on suspension is gone with the wind. :hmmmm::hmmmm::hmmmm:

Should I opt for a better suspension or just stick with the existing GAB suspension. Considering it is one of the main item which will determine how the car handles on the track, maybe it is a good choice to get a better one. After being poisoned and sleepless night thinking(did sleep actually, need go office and work) and going around digging for $$$, I decided to replace the GAB suspension with a brand new ftuned racing suspension with track/racing set up according to ftuned. Managed to sell the GAB suspension for some cash. Hope the 2 year warranty and the outcome will be worth every penny.

Goodies!
<a href='http://postimg.org/image/obwew487t/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/obwew487t/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Its in! (tend to say to people got ftuned cause same color with my car). Ah, forget to mentioned about the steel braided brake line. It comes with the car as well. My friend(ex owner) say he just install them before he decide to sell the car. Cant thank him more!

To take my mind off the purchase of the suspension which I dint manage to get it cheap, I tend to focus on what more I can/needed to do. Cheap is good, free is event better! ahaha!.

Decided to strip off the carpet. Been told that it is safer without the factory carpet in the case of fire and also to get the racecar feel.   I think all the safety point is just an excuse for me to strip it off, just want the racecar feel most of it.

Still at the situation of a hole in my pocket, just preparing the car with cheap and free stuff. Thanks to my friend of lending the stuff to me. Installed my seats, room bar, rear tower bar(I think its called tower bar, bar on top of the rear suspension). Yes a rollcage would be very nice, but as for now I think I will just stick without rollcage first.

Bars in.

As can be seen, some rust have got the better of the rear end of the car(spare tyre area, lucky it was not that bad. Cleaned the rust and respray it with another coating of paint.

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/ppo1rf7h5/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/ppo1rf7h5/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Really non pro job, but it will do I think.

In the mean time, managed to get myself a pair of Evo 3 lower arm. The car comes with stock lower arm and according to the ex owner better if changed them with an Evo3 lower arm to get the caster right. Dint expect the stuff going to be that expensive, they say it considered to be something hard to find. If thats true then Im glad Im able to get one for myself.

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/is2b4g2vt/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/is2b4g2vt/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Not using the engine from the great Evo, the lower arm also can lah.

Just to top things off, since previously no stock seat belt receiver(I just googled this, dont know what it is called - daily languange maybe will just say; tempat seat belt kat seat) left after sell off the original seat, I have decided to get just thr normal 4 point harness(TAKATA ayam brand). FIA one cannnot afford.

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/rjnmaujrt/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/rjnmaujrt/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Hope these will able to serves its purposes.

To further the racecar feel, without any doubt the muffler have to go due to its size/weight and the main the thing the sound it produces. Yes I do prefer a comfortable and quiet ride for my daily ride, but not for this. (In the same quite worry also how does it going to sound like - if the sound is too ugly how?)

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/d7zis7c7t/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/d7zis7c7t/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Byebye.

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/d2qnxvm3d/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/d2qnxvm3d/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
In with a much smaller muffler. My worry will continue haunting me.

After installing the seats, noticed that the furthest(to the front) the seat can go is not that much. At the most front position my leg reach for the pedals is still OK, but not for my hands. Yes! Deep dish wheels and a quick release bosskit! Which I can not affort for the time being(the list is still long - more important one).

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/hp55p715l/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/hp55p715l/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
I have decided for the time being to improve a bit the hand reach, got myself an extender. Imported from China!(yes because it is cheap). Yes the hand reach thing does improve a bit with the extender but in the future a deep dish OMP wheels would be super nice.

I always wanted to do this, put holes in my rear bumper, this supposed to be better? Dont really care just like the look. Feels very itchy also to cut the rear bumper for better air flow but dint managed to get around it yet.

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/66jgi28pl/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/66jgi28pl/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Fire in the holes! Err holes in bumper. Since we are very artistic kind of people, the allignment of the place went off quite obviosly. Ahaha!

The car was sent for re-allignment to reset everything to 0(if possible). Been told that front left side was always been an issue. Been told that from factory its not that straight like how it should be.

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/z8ojteg7t/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/z8ojteg7t/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Most costly allignment I have done. Ahaha! How I wish I could afford the to do the corner weight as well. Cant wait to see how the car handles!

Got a secondhand oil pressure meter for the car as it needed monitoring. Also got a water temp and still looking oil temp gauge.

<a href='http://postimg.org/image/im6zkbna1/' target='_blank'><img src='http://s20.postimg.org/im6zkbna1/image.jpg' border='0' alt="image" /></a>
Choose a mechanical gauge as it is more accurate compared to the electronic one. Maybe those expensive one like defi is accurate even it is electronic. (Correct me if Im wrong - just depend on people's opinion).

Now waiting to install the gauges, engine oil cooler & relocator, clutch and also to tune the AFR. Only 1 weekend to go hope it can be done.

great topic and congrats on your TD car venture, a good point to note is even though the said satria can never participate in official Sepang organized championship events, there are other events such as the new MSF that accepts these cars

should you choose to race it in the future

Thot of it will be nice to get laptime recorded(not nessarily very accurate) for personal references. Understand that trackdays they dont have the time responder(or whatever the device is called). Maybe apps in mobile phone?

Would be great if anyone could share their experience using any apps for laptime.

Thanks in advance!

If possible strengthen the chassis, strip the car down and do the double welding or spot welding. Anti rust it also and it'll last you for a very long time...

The device we use at Sepang is the Transponder made by MyLaps which is pretty hefty to purchase or will cost between RM0 - RM200 to rent and depends which event or what duration

For personal reference you can apps like you said. You can try Harry's Lap Timer or TrackAddict

Also, get a GoPro to record on board videos so you can study or morning for future improvements
