In the same event, Bermaz Motor also introduced a diesel option for its mid-size crossover, the CX-5 SkyActiv-D.

What's the deal?

Like the Mazda6, this new CX-5 SkyActiv-D is also equipped with Mazda's super-efficient and environmentally-friendly diesel engines that comply strict emission regulations including Euro6. As for now, the locally-assembled (CKD) crossover will only be offered in 2WD configuration, but certainly unique driving experience since it is the only diesel-powered crossover from Japan in its segment.

Exterior

The CX-5's appearance is nearly similar to the range-topping 2.5-litre petrol unit, with Mazda's 'KODO - sould of motion' behind the design principle that captures the muscular beauty of a crossover into exuding dynamism.

Specs like full LED DRLs, auto on/off headlights (with auto-levelling function), fog lights and rear combination taillights are available here.

Wheels are a lightweight 19-inch alloys wrapped in 225/55 rubbers. The CX-5 comes with 5 different shades; Aluminium Metallic, Arctic White, Blue Reflex and Meteor Grey.

Interior

Moving inside, the CX-5 SkyActiv-D is again not much different from the SkyActiv-G petrol-powered ones. The cockpit emphasizes what Mazda calls the 'one-ness', typical Mazda philosophy that offers connectedness between the car and driver.

The CX-5 gets engine start/stop button, electronic integrated cruise control, dual-zone climate control air-conds, auto-dimming rear view mirror, one touch (up and down) power window with anti-pinch and adjustable steering with tilt and telescopic function.

Engine

The CX-5 SkyActiv-D offers 173hp and stonking 420Nm of torque from its potent 2.2-litre engine. Similar to the lump that powers the Mazda6, this SkyActiv-D in the CX-5 features two-stage turbochargers for smooth and linear response from low to high end engine rev, greatly improving torque across the rev range. The system also offers responsiveness at
low rev and maintains power at high rev.

Mazda's diesel engines also resolved the typical problems in conventional diesels such as misfiring and poor fuel consumption during cold starts. Mazda counters this with variable valve lift (VVL) for the exhaust valve and high precision multi-hole piezo injectors for variable injection patterns; resulting in controlled combustion temperature which improves cold start.

Infotainment

For infotainment, the CX-5 comes with 7-inch full colour touch screen display MZD Connect unit, Bluetooth hands-free, multi-function commander control, GPS with 3D and 2D modes, integrated audio control on steering wheel with phone connectivity, 2 USB-audio input ports (iPod compatible) and 6 audio speakers.

Safety

Safety-wise, the CX-5 SkyActiv-D is packed with equipements like 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control System (TCS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).

On the driving assists side, Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Smart City Brake Support and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) are all available.

Similar to Mazda6, the CX-5 scores a full 5 star for Euro NCAP.
