My friend asked me if there is anything that he can do to reduce tyre road noise level in his car. Currently he is using 225/45/18 Good Year Eagle Efficient Grip tyres for this car. These are the tyres that came stock with the car. He points out that the tyre road noise is quite noticeable when driving at higher speed. So, is there other tyres that can be recommended for him to further reduce the road noise?

He said he is considering to increase the tyre sidewall profile but I told him that might cause him to scrape his tyres against the fenders.

soundproofing might help reducing few dB..
Not so sure sound proofing can still enhance anything much because the car is a F30 320i. Engine is quiet even when nearing redline at 6000rpm. That is why on normal cruising, the tyre noise can be heard clearly.

Sound proofing helps slightly. The GY Efficient grip suppose to be a quiet tyre already. Anyway the quietest tyre I know should be the Yokohama dB V551. If not then Michelin P3ST, but looking at thread pattern Yoko should be more quiet.

To increase sidewall profile need to use smaller rims. The size closest will be 225/50R17, then 215/55R17. If keep 18" then is 215/50R18, but I don't think it will help reduce noise. The noise comes from tyre pattern and road surface.....:driver:

I see. Thanks for telling. I'll highlight about the Yokohama dB V551 to him next time when he wants to change his tyres. By the way, I think Yokohama dB series is used on several stock Lexus vehicles.

I told him about 225/50/18 but I don't think that will be possible for his car because currently his tyre gap with fender is already quite narrow.

I don't think my friend will downsize his rims as he liked the 18". 215/50 means the tyres will be stretched?
Just explaining the sizes that you can work with, but usually we don't downgrade....lol
Keep original size is best, play with tyre model to reduce noise. Last resort ask him turn his radio volume up.....hhahahhahahhaha:biggrin:

Downsizing will still work for his car as most F30 3 series came with 17" stock. But for his car, I think he purposely choose the 18" option, so downgrade is surely a no for him, haha. Once he told me before that he might be interested in changing into 19" ori Vossen wheels. If so, the road noise will be worse?

Downsize to 17" correctly is fine, like 225/45R18 to 225/50R17. Diameter almost same and still on 225 width, but if maintain 18" and go from 225/45R18 to 215/50R18, this becomes really as downgrade as tyres becomes narrower

If he upgrade to 19", I think at least he need to use 235 or 245 width tyres already. Will that increase road noise?

Yup, need 245/35R19. Again depending on the tyres how noisy, and with more contact surface should be louder too, and with 35series, get ready for more bumpy ride....

I'll tell him about this next time. With 20mm wider tyres and larger wheels, his acceleration and fuel consumption will suffer slightly as well.

Hi
I have a 2005 model Proton Waja 1.6 automatic. Recently I notices that when I switched on the head lamp the "R" indicator light was on slightly when I was driving the car, and the right signal light blink faster than normal when I make a right turn.

No such problem is observed if I do not switch on the head lamp.

Any one encountered similar problem and any suggested solution ?

Thanks
