Aside from the cute little Cygnet, Aston Martin is well known for their luxurious Gran Tourers housing extra-large V12s, ferrying the occupants through long distances in great speeds. And also with a very active motorsport division that enters almost every single type of race available in Europe, it is hard to associate Aston Martin with saving the environment, until now.

Soon to enter the daunting 24-Hours of Nurburgring, the British marquee had just successfully tested a very special Rapide S which runs purely on hydrogen. This gives the Rapide S the ability to emit zero CO2 during their test lap at the Nurburgring on April 27, with Aston Martin’s own CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez himself making this historic run.

Using the four-hour ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN Series race to give the car a proper shakedown, the team is looking forward in running the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S in the race. But they are not only looking forward in participating, but also to stabilize the system in order to further improve the Rapide S to complete many more zero emission laps during the race.

When it runs later this month, this particular Rapide S will officially become the first hydrogen-powered car to compete in an international event, and that also includes in being the first zero CO2 emissions sports car to compete at this endurance race. Competing in the E1-XP experimental class, the car is being powered by a prototype 6.0-liter V12 engine with extra boost provided by two turbochargers.

If practice so far is anything to go by, the high tyre degradation being experienced at Sepang by the Formula one teams will turn this Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix into a highly tactical affair that will see the best strategy to conserve tyres bring about a victor.

The high track temperatures and abrasive surface of the Sepang International...
