DRIFT GRAND PRIX MOVES UP NORTH TO PENANG FOR ROUND 4
Penang:
The thrills and spins of drift racing move up north to Penang on Aug 12 when Round 4 of the D1 Grand Prix (D1 GP) Malaysian drift series will be held at Batu Kawan Stadium car park.
Fans of drift racing from Penang and the surrounding northern states will also have an opportunity to be thrilled by Japanese “Drift King” Keichi Tsuchiya, chief judge of the five-event series, who also had a role in the movie “Tokyo Drift”. He will give an exhibition of his driving skills in the afternoon of Sunday, Aug 13
Genji Hashimoto, Amprex Motor Sports president and organizer of the event said the event is being staged in Penang to enable people in the northern states to witness this new popular motor sport, which is fast growing in the United States and Japan.
He said: “ We staged round two in Johor for the southern and Singapore drift fans and now we are bringing it to Penang for the benefit of the many drifters up north”.
Hashimoto invited drifters and fans to witness the event which is FREE to the public.
On Saturday, Aug 12 there will be the practice session beginning at 3.00 p.m. On Sunday, Aug 13 at 1.30pm will be the qualifying session followed by the finals and ending at 4.45pm with the prize giving ceremony.
Local drift racing ace Tengku Djan Ley in his Toyota AE 86 is expected to dominate Rd 4 after having won Rd 2 at Danga Bay, Johor Baru in April and Rd 3 at Shah Alam in July.
Another driver expected to do good is Zero Lim Kim Ling , third in Rd 3 at Shah Alam and winner of Rd 1 and also Lim Zee King.
All the participants are zooming for the grand final on Oct 28 at Shah Alam where the top three winners will enter the D1 GP international event in the United States from 16th to 17th December this year.
Idemitsu is onboard as partner-sponsor with Proton R3 as technical sponsor and supported by Alla-Fonte Ace Canning as co-sponsors of the event.
