China: Three Killed in Yet another Drink-and-Drive, Supercar-Taxi Collision

Only weeks after the Ferrari and Lexus crash in Singapore took place, another taxi had become a victim of careless driving in Shenzhen, China. And the culprit behind this incident this time? A red Nissan R35 GT-R, with yet again a drunk driver behind the wheels.

The Nissan GT-R was said to be involved in a drag race with a BMW, and was travelling at speeds of around 180km/h, according to witnesses. The GT-R then collided into two taxis, where both the driver and passenger of the GT-R then fled the scene of the accident, but turned themselves in not long after. Although this is quite similar to the two crashes in Singapore, it is a bit different as the taxi driver and two of its passengers were killed after a fire broke out, which was believed to have started off from the taxi’s battery pack.

The taxi, a BYD e6 electric car, uses a 48 kW.h lithium iron phosphate battery as its main power plant. Although investigations are still in progress in determining the exact cause of how the fire broke out, the shares for the Chinese automaker had already plunged downwards as rumors are immediately putting the blame on the battery pack.

If this is truly the battery pack’s fault, this might bring some bad implications to the manufacturers of hybrid/electric motor that uses the same type of battery to power their electric motor. But still, the main lesson or highlight here is not about whether the battery pack is safe or not; keep in mind that drinking and driving will never mix!

From the pic, I believe the taxi was rear ended with huge impact sure the taxi would have spun and bang into other things. Such damage anything be it battery pack or gasoline will caught fire due to spark or short circuit....so can't say Hybrid is dangerous la....

just watched how bear grylls puncture his cellphone's lithium ion battery to start a fire.. that thing is furious.. once have contact with air, the lithium sparks like a rocketfuel.. just imagine the battery in a hybrid/electric car.. although were made with highly impact resistant materials, but with such high speed and sharp metals all around, who knows this wouldn't happen again.
