If you use original ignitor, u can directly trigger it from the cpu but using VB makes no harm and you can use that either to trigger the ignitor or to directly trigger the coil. Just some sort of a buffer to the cpu.
Many cases that the VB got fried because of installation mistakes but it you don't have that for the buffer..... the whole unit is useless... you got it?

I think you should take note of what you have read. It seems like you're still left in the dark.
The MS kits are a 'STANDALONE' ecu and it's complete. However, to suits your personnel application, you may or may not need extra components. eg: if you want to control launching, then you have to add some extra transistor and resistors to have that feature. If you want to use wasted spark configuration, than you have to ad the extra VB and some resistors etc...
The kit you receive from your order, basically, should be able to run an engine that uses a distributor.
