What is the most expensive price for a car ever recorded? If one would have to give a guess, surely the names of the uber-exotic machines with its lightning-fast acceleration will pop out like the Bugatti Veyron Super Sports, the Koenigsegg Agera R, or anything under the Pagani’s brand. But although they do fetch some sky-high prices (Super Sports = USD 2.4mil, Agera R= USD 1.6mil, for Pagani, let’s take the Cinque Roadster= USD 1.85mil), those figures are just a speck of what a classic Ferrari could reach in the private collector’s world.

With only 39 of such specimen ever produced, the 1960’s Ferrari 250 GTO is one of the most sought-after collector’s cars in the world. It is so rare and valuable that during the 599 GTO shooting in Top Gear UK, even Jeremy Clarkson himself could not get a ride in it because the BBC could not afford the insurance. And with that kind of rarity and value, just how much could this 50+ year-old piece of automotive classic could fetch? USD 2 million? Or maybe USD 3 million? Not even close as a 250 GTO has been confirmed to have switched hands with the price of USD 35 million, or in local terms, RM 112 million!

This apple-green GTO was made for the famed British racer, Sir Stirling Moss, which he never had the chance to compete in it due to a crash at the Goodwood Circuit in Sussex that ended his career. It did saw some action in the hands of his team mate, Innes Ireland in the 1962 Le Mans, before ending up in the world of private car collectors. This specific car has been changing owners ever since, before ending up at collector Craig McCaw’s possession where the previous owner, Eric Heerema got it for a price of USD 8.5 million. McCaw was the co-founder of McCaw Cellular, which was acquired by AT&T back in 1993 for USD 11.5 billion.
And although the car has not been raking a lot of mileage since its first and last race, the value of it is expected to skyrocket to an unimaginable level. If right now, someone was willing to put a price of USD 35 million for this classic Ferrari, I wonder just how much it would fetch in 10 or maybe 20 years to come?
