What’s the deal?

Here it is, the new Proton Ertiga. With the launch of the new compact MPV, it marks the end of a series of intensive launches from the national carmaker – the introduction list spans Perdana, Persona, Saga and Ertiga in June, August, September and November respectively.

Some background on the MPV, the Ertiga is a rebadged Suzuki Ertiga facelift. Yup, Proton retains the name from the donor car. The Ertiga will be manufactured in the carmaker’s Tanjung Malim plant and with knock down kits coming from Suzuki Indonesia.

Originally classified as a 7-seater MPV in Indonesia, the Ertiga however will be configured as a 6-seater to suit Malaysian safety regulations. Will it cannibalise the Exora? Well, Proton will continue selling the Exora but the bigger MPV is slotted in C-segment while the Ertiga is in B-segment.

Engine

Propelling the Ertiga is a 1.4-litre K14B DOHC engine making 91hp at 6,000rpm and 130Nm at 4,000rpm. The VVT timing chain unit is the first of its kind to be offered under the Proton's fleet. Customers will have the option of a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Zerotohundred run is rated at 11.8 seconds for the MT and 13.9 seconds for the AT.

The Ertiga is also the first Proton to be credited with EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle) status; performing 5.7 litre per 100km (AT) and 6.0 litre per 100km (MT) of fuel consumption at a constant 90km/h cruise.

Exterior

Constructed on an extended Suzuki Swift platform, the Ertiga is measured at 4,265mm long, 1,695mm wide and 1,685mm tall. 3 flavours available; Executive MT, Executive AT and the range-topping Executive Plus AT.

The MPV gets halogen reflector-type headlights, front and rear fog lights, electric-powered wing mirrors, rear parking sensors and 15-inch wheels with 185/65 rubbers across the range. There’s a chrome grille up front as well as a chrome bar in between the tail lights. The Ertiga comes in 4 choices of colours, namely Cotton White, Ruby Red, Carnelian Brown, and Metal Grey.

Interior

In the cabin, the MPV receives beige fabric upholstery and 2-tone interior (beige and light grey) to underpin the sense of spaciousness. The Ertiga is fitted with an integrated head unit with CD and USB player with 4 speakers.

Moving to the rear passenger area, there’s slideable middle row seats with 240mm range, 60:40 split-folding capability, 1-touch function for access to third row and 2 ISOFIX anchors. There’s also a ceiling-mounted rear air-con with blower control for the middle and third row passengers.

Safety

The new Ertiga is equipped with 2 front airbags, ABS with EBD and side impact beams. Each of the 6 seats gets 3-point seatbelts and the MPV is awarded with a 4-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

Executive Plus AT

What does the Executive Plus gets you? The range-topping Ertiga adds on more bits like chrome trims on fog light housings and interior door handles, power-foldable wing mirrors, wing mirror mounted LED turn signals, height-adjustable driver’s seat, steering-mounted audio control and backseat pockets on both front seats.

Priced from RM58,800 all the way to RM64,800, the new Proton Ertiga is now available for test drive and booking at all Proton Edar outlets nationwide. For more information, please contact 1-800-888-398 or visit www.protonertiga.proton.com.

Not sure why Proton decided to rebadge this. With this pricing and engine specs, it will face fierce competition from Alza. Not to mention the 3SZ-VE engine from Alza is a Toyota unit where they are normally known to be durable and easy to source for spare parts.

I look at this like a successor to the largely failed Proton Juara that is based on Mitsubishi Town Box Wide.

1.4... wow....later they will add turbo. Like exora. lol...
Markup the price again.
Depending whether the engine bay and mounting can fit or not. Since Proton campro engines are sort of based on Mitsubishi engine structure and mounting (hence, that is why they are able to mount the reversed 4G63 and 4G9 series engine in campro proton cars). Now this is a Suzuki car.....

But seriously, 91hp is bad for a 6 seater... Maybe it is trying to compete with Avanza 1.3.

It is INDEED targeted to Perodua Alza. The rebadging of Ertiga is part of Proton-Suzuki partnership signed earlier this year. With Suzuki withdrawing their sales and manufacturing operation, the partnership helps the company to continue selling cars here while Proton gets to venture into a new segment. A win-win situation, I believe.

It's just that with current global trend, Proton should develop an SUV to be offered to both local and export market, instead of offering the B-segment MPV. My personal opinion though.

An SUV based on Iriz or Preve platform with CFE, CVT, 2WD, Proton's handling and priced below 80k sounds like a winner.

A rebadged Vitara will probably be better off for Proton. Since they don't have any prior experience in building and designing SUV, perhaps they can learn first by rebadging a SUV.

Or they can even try to target the A-segment market by doing a rebadge of Suzuki Alto to compete with Axia.

This Ertiga here seems to be in a half hanging situation... Interior is looking very basic, almost like the first generation Avanza which is more than a decade ago. It is like, there isn't a particularly strong selling point of this car. I'm not saying this is a bad car, it probably serves all the basic needs, but it doesn't shine in any particular way.

There might be field hockey and ice hockey but, as anybody that has seen both games played, they share as much in common as a bikini and full-body wetsuit. Another more worthy example for these pages might be Formula One and Nascar.

Though the two might not be associated at all, sharing sponsors has made the jump a little less harsh on the knees lately, especially since Juan Pablo Montoya made the leap...
