Lexus Malaysia, a division of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. yesterday introduced the LS 600h L and RX 450h; two models that signify the arrival of the Lexus hybrid vehicles, the only full hybrid Luxury vehicles in Malaysia.

At the media launch event, Mr. Kuah Kock Heng, President of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd mentioned, “Lexus is the first and only luxury car manufacturer to offer a comprehensive range of Hybrid vehicles. No other brand offers as much variety as Lexus.”

Globally, Lexus is offering a total of 4 Hybrid models; LS 600h L, RX 450h, GS 450h, HS 250h. The latest CT 200h will only be available in 2011.

Also present at the launch were Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin, Chairman UMW Toyota Motor, Mr. Takashi Hibi, Deputy Chairman, UMW Toyota Motor, Dato’ Syed Hisham Syed Wazir, President and Group CEO, UMW Holdings Berhad, Mr. Naohisa Hatta, Assistant Chief Engineer of RX 450h, Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, and Mr Harry Loo Chee Yan, Director of Lexus Malaysia.

Lexus Hybrid Drive is the world’s most advanced Hybrid technology that provides an impressively powerful performance. The electric motor and petrol engine work seamlessly together to produce a very responsive drive with outstanding acceleration giving a truly enjoyable driving experience.

The new Lexus RX450h is the new flagship model in the RX range, and is the first hybrid to deliver class leading economy and efficiency, while delivering on the needs of luxury SUV owners.

The exterior design of the RX looks similar to the rest of the RX models in that it still incorporates the three elements of L-finesse design philosophy: Incisive Simplicity, Intriguing Elegance and Seamless Anticipation. The front grille has been updated and the latest interpretation of the classic Lexus front grille now flows from the bonnet to fuse with the front bumper.

The RX450h also continues the distinct Lexus Hybrid Drive bold front looks with the blue tinted L.E.D headlamps. The stern expression is achieved through the use of a three-barrel design, housing the first two LED projectors together, while placing the turn signal lamp at the outer corner. A third LED unit is located below the pair, using parabolic reflectors to distribute a wide lighting area within a short distance. Together with a high-output halogen high beam and a compact double Projector Ellipsoid System (PES), the headlamps offer a unique design and enhanced long-distance night visibility.

Similar to the LS600hL headlamps, the RX450h low-beam LED headlamps is designed to have 90% light intensity even after 15 years of vehicle use, effectively making the low beam headlights maintenance free.

Like the exterior, the interior of the RX450h also remains similar to the rest of the RX models. The main difference lays in the instrument panel as it now features blue accented meters that strengthen the hybrid image, while the large Hybrid System Indicator works as a reminder that you're driving a hybrid vehicle. The indicator features a function to display the Eco driving range in addition to the power meter to indicate the hybrid system's output force and regenerative charging.

The interior also features a newly designed Remote Touch controller that features a twin-axis force feedback controller knob to assist the driver with selecting the appropriate function. While all the controls are within easy reach of the driver, a trademark of all Lexus models, the RX450h also offer's the Lexus 12-speaker Premium Audio System. All components are creatively placed with the angles of the speakers, tweeters and squawkers placed at angles that effectively transform the cabin into a clear, crisp acoustic environment. The audio system features a large 8" sub woofer, 6CD changer with external audio terminals consisting of a USB input and AUX input.

The RX450h is powered by a sophisticated petrol-electric full hybrid system for a combination of reduced fuel consumption together with strong acceleration. The RX450h's Lexus Hybrid Drive System consists of a purpose-developed Atkinson Cycle 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine, a 123kW electric front drive motor that powers the front wheels only, a 50kW rear motor, a electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT), a three-pack compact 288V hybrid battery and a compact new Power Control Unit (PCU).

The combined hybrid system output is rated at 295bhp, while delivering a class-leading 15.9km/l combined fuel efficiency. CO2 emissions level is equally impressive, emitting 148g/km, a figure unheard of in the luxury SUV segment, as it is achieved only by compact sedans or hatchbacks.

The newly-develop 2GR-FXE engine shares the basic architecture as the RX 350's engine. However, the unique features in the RX450h engine includes the Atkinson Cycle operation that makes full use of combustion energy by making the expansion stroke longer than the compression stroke, water cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation that decreases engine pumping losses by sending small specific amounts of exhaust gas into the intake system, intake-only VVT-i and an accessory belt to only drive the water pump. Compared to the outgoing RX400h, theengine produces 18% more power, peaking at 245bhp at 6000rpm and 317Nm of torque at 4800rpm. The intake manifold for the enginehas a hybrid-specific design, with large sound resonators, as well as the addition of a pressure sensor for use with the EGR system. The exhaust emission is Euro 5 compliant. Both the RX450h and LS600hL are able to run on the cheaper RON95 fuel widely available in Malaysia.

Also launched was the Lexus flagship hybrid luxury sedan, the LS600hL. The new luxury sedan is a technological wonder by itself as it's more than just a car but rather a 'luxobarge' that basks its occupants in the pinnacle of luxury while retaining the earth's natural balance.

Like the RX450h, the headlamps are now projector-type with blue crystal rings, it works about the same but feature the world's first night time LED low beams that not only provide excellent visibility but also contribute to the design theme.

The LS600hL was developed with a mission to create "hospitable space" with meticulous attention to every detail that reach all the human senses of touch, sight, aural and scent; the interior or the LS600hL does exactly that. A lot of thought went into the seats as the seating position for all passengers offers plenty of space, is immensely comfortable and ergonomically sound. Similarly found in the Lexus LS460L, the rear left passenger of the LS600hL can enjoy superb comfort with the Rear Seat Relaxation system with power retracting Ottoman seats that also offer a massage function, using pneumatic (air) chambers to provide a complete 'Shiatsu-styled' massage that soothes the shoulder, back and lumbar area.

The seatback reclines up to 45 degrees while the Ottoman extends over 70 degrees outwards. Lexus first upper-back recliner featuring a 10-degree angle adjustment is used to support the upperhalf of the body, so that the occupant does not bend backwards when reclining. The 'Butterfly' headrests have adjustable sides to provide more comfortable support for the head. A pre-set switch is available on both seats, storing the preferred seat position. The foldable center armrest, which houses all the seat, ventilation and entertainment controls, can be stored away to accommodate an extra passenger.

Like the RX450h, the combination meter in the LS600hL is also unique, with the entire display using sharp display of a Thin Film Transistor (TFT) colour LCD monitor. TFT operates at high speeds, so that the image can be displayed quickly and clearly. Information including a large 280km/h-scale speedometer, tachometer, multi-information as well as the Hybrid System Indicator is displayed. Apart from cruising information, the large screen also can be switched to display the hybrid energy monitor, showing the energy flow of the hybrid system. The TFT LCD monitor can also display turn-by-turn navigation guidance when an active route has been set.

The Lexus LS600hL is powered by the most advanced automotive powertrain on the planet, the Lexus Hybrid Drive. It is the world's first full hybrid system to combine a large capacity V8 petrol engine, permanent all-wheel drive and a high output electric motor.

Regenerative braking based on the hybrid transmission boosts energy recovery efficiency and keeps fuel consumption down, contributing to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. The hybrid powertrain generates a combined output rating of 438bhp and is capable of delivering torque on demand, while returning a very respectable 10.75km/l combined cycle fuel consumption. CO2 emissions are 20 - 30 per cent lower than its main competitors and it's 30 per cent more economical than the LS460L in city traffic or slow speed driving.

The 4969cc engine is a development of the 4.6-liter engine found in the LS460L. The retuned engine now produces 389bhp of power at 6400rpm and a maximum of 520Nm of torque at 4000rpm and has a Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and Electronically controlled intake cam (VVT-iE).

Power is sent to all four wheels via a electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT) with Torsen permanent all-wheel-drive. The all-wheel-drive system uses a Torsen Limited Slip Differential developed specifically for the LS600hL. Besides offering an exquisite balance of natural handling characteristics, the LSD is also able to split torque between the rear and front axles from 40:60 to 30:70 and 50:50 depending on driving conditions. Torque splitting is done during acceleration as well as braking.

A unique feature with all Lexus Hybrid Drive models is the Electric Vehicle (EV) Mode. In this mode, the LS600hL operates like an electric vehicle, running just on the battery pack and electric motor. Driving with EV mode means there is no consumption of fuel, no emission of harmful exhaust gases. The EV mode allows the car to move very quietly and up to speeds of 40km/h for a short distance.

The new LS continues with the long standing tradition of remarkable high quality and craftsmanship that is known of a Lexus. A group of 10 skilled, highly trained and highly specialized workmen (known as Master Craftsmen or Takumi) comprise the key ingredient to the stunning levels of quality found in every production stages of the new Lexus LS. By fusing the most advanced manufacturing technology and craftsmanship, creation of LS masterpieces are completed with unmatched degree of perfection.

Both the RX450h and LS600hL are now officially available in Malaysia and below are the official price lists for the RX450h and the LS600hL:

When looking at oversea selling Motul 800 road racing 2T for +-US$17 and we are getting it at +-RM133 per bottle, I think it is too much. So, I'm wondering if volume can bring down the price a bit. Mix product purchasing also can, like x bottle of different engine oil + x bottle of different 2T.
