Just check the engine number stamped on the engine block. Can easily respray the engine to whatever color

what on earth does 'is the cover remove in this picture', cant understand.

looks like the paint has been removed... All one can tell from this is:
-Intake plenum looks like a skunk so, cant really make a smart guess.
-Dipstick is black(type r's are black) BUT plug cover is black (type r's are silver)... which doesnt really mean much since both can very easily be changed or painted.

easy check the codes. That will at least tell u where the block is from, internals can just pop a plug and spy on the top of the crown, head im not sure, but the older b18's had unique codes

u can try checking the gearbox.. type r will be 6 speed manual while type s will be 5 speed... also comes in auto for type s

still no guarantee that the engine is a type r... but not many type s owners would fork out the cash for a 6 speed type r gearbox since the whole reason for a type s conversion is cheaper budget anyway.
