Introducing D1 Street Legal ! - From D1GP.com

In Tokyo, the D1 Street Legal class is in the plans to be launched near August at the D1 Ebisu round. This class will bring many grassroots enthusiast an opportunity to begin their career in the world of drifting motor sports.

The new regulations introduced are much more lenient compared to the D1 race vehicles, but still have several strict guidelines for safety. Basically, the cars that do not pass the laws of normal street driven cars will not meet the requirements for this class.

There is no such thing of an entrant vehicle passing D1 regulations but will pass the D1 street legal class regulations. In other words, the original D1 regulations still apply, such as the basic restrictions of 4WD, tube chassis, and S tires will apply to the D1street legal class. The following regulations only apply to the Japanese D1 Street Legal class. A new set of regulations for the American release of this class is expected to be introduced in the near future.

In the automotive tuning industry today, there are many sub-groups of people that are involved in the making of D1 and drifting. This new class will produce benefits for the majority of these groups. Amateur drifting enthusiasts are given the opportunity to get their foot in the door to compete in the D1 series and gain recognition. Watching amateur drifting can be entertaining for a change rather than professional drifting, benefiting the spectators in various ways. Aftermarket street legal・and tuning parts will gain sales due to the demand of these components that comply to the new regulations.

With this new class, we are speculating 3-4 more events not including the original D1 Professional events, giving the amateurs/semi-pros more opportunities to perform drifting. This should aid in promoting drifting in authorized areas and not in the streets. Basically, this class can be entered with just about any FR vehicle with safety equipments that satisfy the requirements.

*the following is a basic guide of regulations concerning the rules of the D1 Street Legal class. Please follow the specific list of the regulations if you wish to enter. Be aware, the rules are still subject to changes. These regulations were created for and only apply to the participants in Japan.

Must comply with the law

The vehicles must pass Japanese 都haken・standards. (The Japanese Smog) the D1 class did not really require this proof, but for this new class this document is everything. If the roll cage prevents the use of the rear seats, you must indicate the vehicle is for use for the maximum of 1 driver and 1 passenger only. The photo shows the HKS Altezza Shaken・sheet.

No fender modifications

Of course the main frame cannot be modified, as well as the monocoque. The modification shown on this photo is not permitted. rubbed・fenders are not allowed.

A roll cage must be accompanied with padding

It may be hard to tell by this photo, but all roll cages must be accompanied by padding.

No carbon or FRP doors

In the D1 race cars, many take advantage of the weight saving factors of utilizing the carbon fiber and fiberglass doors. This is not permitted in this class. The factory doors may not be modified in any way. The roll cage may be modified to fit the stock doors.

Air jacks are not permitted

There are vehicles in the D1 class that have air jack systems installed. This is not permitted, only the usage of regular garage jacks are allowed.

No ignition switches

The ignition switch must remain stock. This is not permitted in this class as well as in the Japanese Shaken・laws

The body/frame may not be altered for the suspension

No tube chassis. A convertible must be equipped with a hard top. The vehicle may not have an altered body/frame due to modifications of the suspension for further travel. Basically, the body/frame may not be modified, but parts can be added to it.

No sequential transmissions

As stated, the usage of sequential transmission is not permitted. Modifications of the stock transmission are allowed. (gearing, shifter, etc.)

No engine swaps

The original type of engine must be present in the vehicle. For example, in a vehicle other than a Skyline GT-R, the RB26 engine may NOT be installed into the ER34, HCR34, HCR32, etc. The same goes for an AE85, this may NOT be powered by the 4A-G.
Even if the engine had been legalized, if it is not the assigned original motor, it will not be eligible.

No fuel cells or modified gasoline tanks

A non original gas tank may not be installed. Only an unmodified original gas tank is permitted.

No plexiglass or lexan windows

The vehicle must have the original glass windows on the entire vehicle. No acrylic, poly carbonate, plexiglass or lexan.

No Dashboard Modifications

The vehicle must have room to ride 2 people. The stock dashboard assembly may not be substituted with another material whether its a mold or custom. The rear seats may be deleted.

The car stereo system must be intact

The street driven car must have a car stereo system. GPS navigational system is optional.
