The BMW Motorrad division has just introduced two touring models to its lineup, the BMW K 1600 GT and the BMW K 1600 GTL, that feature the most compact inline-six engines for a production motorcycle.

“In 2010, BMW Group Malaysia had a record breaking year with our BMW Motorrad division, delivering a total of 281 motorcycles. As of the first quarter of this year, we have already sold a total of 74 BMW motorcycles and we are on track to setting another record year for BMW Motorrad here in Malaysia,” said Geoffrey Briscoe, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

Power comes from the lightweight mill touted as the most advanced straight-six power unit for a motorcycle to date. Benefiting from lightweight construction techniques, the engine only weighs 102.6kg, allowing for a total weight of 319kg for the GT and 348kg for the GTL. Total capacity stands at 1,649cc and it produces 160hp with maximum torque coming in at 175Nm.Over 70 per cent of the torque is available from just 1,500rpm, giving the two bikes characteristics fitting of a superior tourer.

On the lower spec GT model, the rider and pillion get ergonomic seating positions while cruise control, xenon headlamps and an on-board computer are standard. The higher spec GTL provides dual level seats for its rider and pillion while the footrests for the rider are moved forward and lowered. Coupled with handlebars that reach further back, it provides for a very relaxed riding posture.

Three different engine settings are available for the rider to select from, Road, Rain and Dynamic. The Road option is used for touring on the road while the Rain setting is for slippery surfaces. Finally, the Dynamic option is to be engaged when the rider is performing dynamic maneuvers.

Safety and practicality are also aspects the bike isn’t lacking in. Adaptive Headlights, a TFT colour display and an optional Electronic Suspension Adjustment II (ESA II) system are available.

The ESA II system allows the rider to adjust the damping properties of the suspension such as the rebound and even spring rates. Adaptive Headlights compensate for diving and banking when the bike is moving to properly illuminate the path directly ahead of the rider.

The on-board computer can be accessed by the 5.7-inch TF display that compliments the twin circular gauges. The screen displays vital information about the bike and will serve as the display for the Motorrad Navigation system as well.

A multi-controller, similar to an i-Drive, is placed on the inner side of the left handlebar grip, keeping it within easy reach of the rider if controls or settings need to be changed.

Pricing for the bikes read RM158,000 for the K 1600 GT and RM168,000 for the more luxurious K 1600 GTL. Both prices are OTR inclusive of personal roadtax registration but excluding insurance.
