You read it right, after an 18-year layoff, BMW will be back knocking fenders in the DTM for the 2012 season. The effort is part of the automaker’s motorsports restructuring process that will see it play a vital role in achieving that target.

The boys from Bavaria have been in contact with the DTM organizers for a while now as they worked out the future regulations and specifications for the racecars. Right up until everything looked to be a decent fit did they announce their comeback to the fan.

Considering the rivals they’ll be lining up against on the starting grid, the BMW M3 looks to fit the bill nicely but until something concrete is laid, it could very well be another model from their line-up.

Whatever it is, we’re just ecstatic of the return of those crazy wide ass bodykits that will surely be hunting down the rivals one by one through the corners.
