Problem Starting Old Proton Iswara

I own an old Proton Iswara manual 1.5. At times, I have problem starting the engine. It gives a tick sound but it doesn't work. I need to turn the key a few times to get it running. My car has already installed with a starter relay long time ago. In fact, I have just replaced a new relay. But the problem still persists.

I read somewhere that by giving a knock on the starter could probably fix the problem; that if the starter has no problem. Could someone tell me where exactly where is the starter? And by the way how much is a new Proton starter?

Could be starter but the way you described sounds exactly like what I used to experience on my wira. I thought it was the starter but turned out to be the ignition switch. Had to turn it several times before it will start. Was okay after the switch got replaced.

One way to check is when next time it wont start, check to see if relay got triggered

If you knock the starter and it can start then probably the starter problem already. Usually switch problem adding relay can help unless the switch really gone.....

I know where the replay as I have just replaced a brand new one. I will give it a try as suggested. It is the starter which I am not too sure where is it located.

I am probably reading this wrong. Did you say you do not know where the starter is located? Looks like this ...

Should be located between engine and firewall under your inlet manifold. Follow your relay wire, and it will lead you to the starter....:driver:

I changed the carbon brush inside the starter couple of years ago. costs bout Rm60, but not many mechanics willing to do it.
alternatively u could source a used one from halfcut shop, ensure to give the exact model, cc & year of your car.

Half cut ones sometimes not reliable also.....:banghead:

Most of the time the solenoid is kaput.
some specialist shop to sell solenoid seperately.
most shop sell as a set with starter.
For kenari, solenoid cost abt rm60-70.starter set cost abt rm 120-150.

Recon starter set is the same as half cut set.its a 50/50 gamble.

That depends on what type of recon. Taking a half cut and clean it up as recon then no difference.
If recon as in take apart, clean and change the parts then definitely is better.
So far I have used half cut alternator, lasting one week, second one about two weeks. Recon ones up to 2 years. My starter now also recon and even my air con compressor. Compressor so far already 3 years plus, so I am ok with reson.... :driver:
