Did you know that there was a world record for the fastest drift ever? Set by Jakub Przygonski in a highly modified Toyota GT86, he paved himself into the record books with his 217km/h drift at Airport Biala Podlaska near Warsaw, Poland. Of course, that was back in 2013 and like all records, they are meant to be broken.

Enter Masato Kawabata. As someone that needs no further introduction in the drifting scene, the Japanese was set to demolish the previous record with a very special machine in hand. While Przygonski’s GT86 had 1068bhp in its disposal, the Nissan GT-R Kawabata will be piloting has 1,380-horsepower to properly punish the rear wheels into oblivion.

The car was modified by GReddy Trust and was thoroughly tested at the Fuji Speedway in Japan. The record breaking drift will be attempted at the Fujairah International Airport, in the United Arab Emirates, which was picked for its 3km-long airstrip.

In order to comply with the guidelines set by Guinness World Records, the team is only given three attempts to accomplish the feat. With such a car and a talented driver like Kawabata behind the wheel, they had managed to topple the previous record by drifting the Godzilla with a speed of 304.96km/h and at a 30-degree angle!
