There are a number of ways that one could use to describe the Volkswagen’s XL1, and one of them is definitely ‘fuel-saving’. Powered by a 0.8-liter two-cylinder diesel engine paired with an electric motor, the XL1 only sips 0.9 liters of fuel per 100km. With such characteristics, you would not probably label such car to be sporty, but Volkswagen would like to change your perception on that.
With the Paris Motor Show now in full swing, Volkswagen has introduced a new variant of their fuel-efficient XL1 called the XL Sport. The XL1 is already super light as Volkswagen had gone through great lengths to have it weighs close to nothing to save fuel, so a 1.2-liter V2 engine from the Ducati Superleggera with 197-horsepower should be more than enough to take the XL Sport to great speeds.
The XL Sport has a newly developed intermediate gearbox to reduce engine speeds, with the seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission driving the rear axle. Volkswagen claims that the XL Sport can go from zerotohundred in 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 270km/h.
Despite sharing the same underpinnings as the XL1, the XL Sport has a more aggressive appearance with a wider and longer body, which most of them are manufactured in carbon-reinforced polymer. As for the time being, the XL Sport will just remain as a study as there is no plans in putting it into production.
