Toyota releases production tuned 86 “14R60”, limited to 100 units only!

There is no doubt that the Toyota 86 is an interesting and sporty platform that enthusiasts have been waiting for years, but some of them would like to get more out of the 86 right from the production lines. To show that Toyota actually listens to such demands, they went straight to work in fiddling the 86 and came out with the 14R60.

GRIFFON-587x270

Despite its weird name, you will know that this tuned version of the 86 will be a good one as it is derived from the Griffon concept. To those unaware what the Griffon concept is, it is an R&D 86 tuned by Toyota’s in-house TRD that looks great and goes really fast. It had lapped the Tsukuba circuit earlier this year with an impressive timing of 0:58.407.

The goodies thrown into the 14R60 is enough to prepare it for a raceway tuner challenge. The exterior gets a whole lot of improvements via new front and rear bumpers, new side skirts, and a wide range of carbon fiber parts like the canards, roof, rear diffuser, and the swan neck rear wing.

The stock wheels have been replaced with specially-designed forged magnesium wheels, wrapped around with Bridgestone’s 235/40R18 RE-11A 3.3T tires. Hiding underneath those wheels are a set of TRD mono-block calipers with 6-pot for the front and 2-pot for the rear, mated to 365mm ventilated and slotted TRD front rotors, and smaller 330mm units in the rear. The 14R60 rides on a set of height-adjustable, mono-tube, TRD-tuned dampers.

While the brakes might indicate that the car received a boost of power, do not put your hopes up to high as the car is still a naturally-aspirated machine. Aside from some upgraded air filter and a new engine cover, the 2.0-liter FA20 boxer engine still has the same output as the standard 86 of 200-horsepower and 205Nm of torque. However, it is mated to a new six-speed, close ratio, TRD transmission that gives it better acceleration than the stock 86.
