The BMW X4 in a nutshell
We won’t blame you if your first impression of the X4 screams baby X6, as we also observe the same thing. The X4 can be considered as a baby X6. But despite that, the BMW X4 bears a closer technical resemblance to the BMW X3.

Engine and Performance
In Malaysia, the BMW X4 is powered by BMW’s N20B20 2L inline-4 engine. This engine features a twin scroll turbocharger and can pump out 245 hp with 350 NM of torque from just 1,250 rpm. The only transmission choice available is an 8 speed automatic transmission with Steptronic. Don’t let that fool you as gearshifts is smooth and seamless, almost like a CVT. Zerotohundred is achieved in a mere 6.4 seconds, and top speed is at 232 km/h.

Technology Behind the Brawn
Power aside, the BMW X4 is also a very clever SAC (Sports Activity Coupe), as it features many of BMW’s hallmark technologies, like BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and Performance Control. Then there’s the BMW xDrive all wheel drive system. This is paired with Performance Control and is standard for the BMW X4. Performance Control will deliberately brake inner wheels through a corner to prevent understeering.

Other than that, the BMW X4 also features a Variable Sport Steering that can adjust to the steering angle of the front wheels to the driving condition.

Exterior
As mentioned earlier, the BMW X4 bears much resemblance to its bigger brother, the BMW X6. The BMW X4 features 19″ Y-spoke light alloy wheels wrapped with 245/45/19 rubbers on the front, while the rears get 275/40/19 rubbers. Those wanting a bit more can opt for the M Sport variant of the BMW X4, aptly named the BMW X4 xDrive28i M Sport. The M Sport variant features 19″ wheels with a different double spoke style 622M light weight wheels. Tire size remains identical to the regular X4 variant. Other than the rims, the M SPort package also includes the M Aerodynamics exterior styling. This gives the BMW X4 a much more aggressive stance over the competition. The Carbon Black metallic color is also exclusive to the M Sport package.

Interior
On the interior, it’s pretty much standard BMW X model affair, with everything in easy reach for the driver. The interior trim of the BMW X4 is called Dark Copper, and it looks very premium. That aside, the BMW X4 offers automatic air-conditioning coupled with dual zone control. One cool feature in the X4 is the fixed 8.8″ display on the center of the dashboard. Every vital information can be read off the display, including navigation, radio, BMW iDrive menu and BMW apps. For the media junkie, you’ll be glad to know that there’s an onboard 20GB storage to store your audio files and map data. Other driver assistance include a reverse camera. For the M Sport variant, there will be a heads-up display for vital information, a Harman Kardon sound system with 16 speakers, interior trim finished in aluminium. Both the front driver and the front passenger will also get sports seats if the buyer opts for the M Sport package. The standard xLine interior trim choices are Leather Nevada Mocha and Leather Nevada Black.

There are also curtain and side airbags to protect the rest of the occupants in an event of a crash. The BMW X4 also features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) which includes Antilock Braking System (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). This will ensure the BMW X4 will remain in control, even in the harshest of conditions.

Other than the BMW X4 launch, BMW Group Malaysia also did an offroad course to showcase the capability of the BMW xDrive all wheel drive system. The cars BMW chose to go offroad was a mix of the X1 and X3. The pair features BMW xDrive all wheel drive system like the X4 as well, and also has Hill Descent Control (HDC) for tougher situations.
