BMW Introduces Its New Racer: The BMW Z4 GT3

Towards the end of last year news broke about BMW working on a race-ready version of the then new Z4. Fast forward a couple of months and we now bring you official images and information of the BMW Z4 GT3. Built for customers who participate in motorsports and compete in races, the Z4 carries on the one ‘not-so-important-in-races’ factor, beauty.

Ensuring race winning performance is the M3’s 4-liter V8 engine but when managed by a Type-408 ECU and Power 400 control unit, the high-revving V8 cranks out a whopping 480hp. A six-speed sequential gaearbox sends power to the rear-wheels. ABS and central-locking wheels come as standard and for the super hot races, BMW will offer air conditioning as an option.

Deliveries will start in the second half of this year with an estimated price of 298,000 Euros. Read on below

BMW Z4 GT3

As part of its customer racing programme, BMW Motorsport is offering private teams another attractive car from 2010: the BMW Z4 GT3. This sports car is an impressive addition to the BMW product range and offers drivers and teams the opportunity to compete in international and national championships in accordance with GT3 regulations – such as the FIA GT3 European Championship, International GT Open and the ADAC GT Masters – as well as in 24-hour endurance races.

The BMW Z4 GT3 is powered by a four-litre, eight-cylinder engine producing approximately 480 bhp. When it comes to electronics, the private teams can look forward to innovative BMW solutions, which have proven themselves in the BMW M3 GT2: the engine is controlled by the modern ECU 408, while the Power400 control unit is responsible for operating all actuators. The transmission takes place via a sequential, six-speed gearbox. The scope of delivery also includes rims with locking and safety clips, as well as racing ABS and optional air conditioning.

The BMW Z4 GT3 in its racing version is available from the second quarter of 2010 at an estimated price of 298,000 Euro (plus VAT). If interested, please send an email to [email protected] or send a fax to +49 89 382 208 55.

Who knows maybe we will see it in Petronas Syntium Team livery.. This new Z4 racer is a GT3 spec car so it's actually more powerful than the Z4M Coupe GT which the Petronas team ran in Super Taikyu/MME/Dubai24.

I did ask the team's boss about whether there is a comparable Z4M successor to the Z4M coupe GT they used and he said it's hard to say as any new race car model would need to be assessed first unless its a 997 RSR.

He admitted that the Porsche is very attractive (performance wise) for race car straight out of the box as the package is well proven over many years through development and evolution. The Petronas Syntium guys lost to a 997 in Dubai. The 997 is still dominating race tracks around the world. In Malaysia the 997 is still the favourite car in class O MME and with an experienced team running it should have been able to win MME last year.

But since Petronas is somewhat linked to Mercedes now, i think seeing this in Petronas livery would probably be a dream. What i think we may see would be another car from Mercedes stables like a SLK or SLS? But the Porsche is a tempting car to get as it is very in win mode nowdays.

Unlike BMW there is nothing really competitive or proven from Mercedes unless someone wants to take the initiative and spend a lot of money to develop a model for racing
