The wait is finally over now that Toyota just officially launched its new and much anticipated Toyota 86 sports coupe in Malaysia! The launch of this automotive legend at the Sepang International Circuit was accompanied by the launch of another Toyota icon, the new Toyota Camry.

Also making a special appearance during this historical launch were the chief engineers for both of the vehicles themselves, Mr. Tetsuya Tada for the Toyota 86, and Mr. Michihiko Sato for the Toyota Camry. After a short presentation from both of the chief engineers about the updated versions of Toyota’s icons, the unveiling of the 86 and Camry took place down at the pits.

Lining up the previous versions, the old 86 and Camry slowly drove in into the curtained pits,...

...and came out transformed into their modern incarnations. The star of the show was undoubtedly the new Toyota 86, which incorporates the soul of the iconic AE86 in its blood. Born and designed as a true sports car, it has an FR layout with a 2.0 litre boxer engine to provide a low centre of gravity in the search for better stability.

“The Toyota 86 was not designed to compete in the muscle car wars or serve as a computer-controlled monster machine which is typical of many of today’s sports cars. Instead it was designed to place the driver in control and developed on the same ‘fun-to-drive’ approach that was taken in the original Toyota AE86, Toyota Sports 800 and Toyota 2000GT”, said the President of UMW Toyota Motor, Mr. Ismet Suki.

A special TRD-tuned version of the 86 also made an appearance, and it sure received quite an extensive range of treatments from the Toyota-specialist tuners. A quick glance throughout the car showed changes everywhere; the exterior, interior, and even more in the engine bay.

While the TRD version of the Toyota 86 is not scheduled for release in Malaysia for the time being, let’s focus on the 86 first.

Priced at RM 243,000 for manual and 249,000 for automatic, the 86 comes with six colour options – Satin White Pearl, Crystal Black Silica, Sterling Silver Metallic, Lightning Red, Galaxy Blue Silica and Orange Metallic.

A question,

The autobox is an actual autobox or is it a dual clutch thingy?

Does it have the flappy paddles like the ones we see in car reviews by foreign mags?

Low quality car la ... Really sad case. Only 100 units allocated to Malaysia so dun need to dream of grey imports. Not for the next few years.
