You get hot air blowing through the vents instead? Usually during gas refill time they will know since it won't make any difference. Mine was detected simply by opening the fuse box, pulling out the air con fuse and saw that it had blown. Replaced new fuse, switch on aircon and it ran for a couple minutes then blew again. When it blew, it made an audible click but in your case I have no idea since you never replaced the fuse to get it running again yet right?what is the symptomp of A/C compressor kong? keep clicking?
Anyway in my case most likely cause was compressor just which part was yet to be determined since needed to be disassembled. Once all apart, was the magneto coil (?) that was shorted so replaced that for RM100ish. But not always can be fixed, sometimes compressor needs replacing completely. Mine was due to power steering fluid leaking onto the compressor over time (had to top up power steering twice in two months but never got around to properly finding the leak) since compressor covered in oil.
