Hi

Long absent from ZTH

I think want to buy Proton platform with Mitsubishi turbocharged engine. Budget is limited. ..i cannot afford Evos or Imprezas

Im not into competition / drag / track racing. It just for self satisfaction and fun. Speed is addictive.

I got 3 options. ..

1. Satria GTI with already converted Evo 3
2. Satria Neo with already converted 1.8T 4G93T
3. Volvo 940 / Mercedes E220 W124 body with 1JZ VVTI

Satria Neo cannot get JPJ endorsement if use Evo 4/5/6 ...right?

If 4G93T 1.8T , could the engine hold 350 to 380 bhp ?

Satria GTI older platform but Evo 3. Satria Neo newer platform but only 1.8T . And 1JZ is new thing to me. Not much knowledge. Volvo 940 body condition around rm6,000. Mercedes W124 around rm10,000. Full 1JZ VVTI conversion im not sure, maybe between rm12,000 to rm15,000. The only bad thing i ask around. ..1JZ VVTI difficult to get manual gearbox.

Advise guys. Remember. ..it just for my late night driving fun. Alone

Thank u

im gona as you a few questions for fun
i)how much do you want to spend on the car.... lets say purchase cost + modifications cost for one then yearly running costs + maintenance costs
ii)u gona do it legally by the books?
iii)how drivable does it need to be? aesthetics?

1. Satria GTI with already converted Evo 3
-this is cheap, clearcut build, and its everywhere
-only issue would be age..... its a very old engine
-price depends on condition i guess

2. Satria Neo with already converted 1.8T 4G93T
-yes technically you cannot shove in a evo 4/5/6/7/8/9 legally, but its still being done if you have $ (neo club has many of these evo converts)
-yes it can be built to push 350whp and more, question is how much $ are you going to throw into it
-have seen a neo running an evo7 with a 6 speed box, around 60k long time back... i wonder how they managed to shove in the 6 speed in....
-have seen evo4 converts going for as low as 35k....

3. Volvo 940 / Mercedes E220 W124 body with 1JZ VVTI (add e36)
-as you have mentioned 'Volvo 940 body condition around rm6,000. Mercedes W124 around rm10,000. Full 1JZ VVTI conversion im not sure, maybe between rm12,000 to rm15,000.
- total up the costs.... lets say 25k for a decent one, you might need to deal with rust, insurance, roadtax, and remember these cars are even older! think of wear and tear.... think of running cost....
-very exp to modify this engine in the long run.....
-and yes the gearbox is basically impossible to find unless you have again, more $
-rwd, so drifting fun?

just throwing more options/poison....

edit: remember this... i see this leading in a direction where this car can probably never be sold again OR will only sell for very little money

also.... personal opinion, power is not really necessary to make a car fun...

Power to weight ratio.

Perodua Kelisa with a K3-VET. Brings you close to Lotus Elise mk1 P-W-R. Needs work on the chassis and suspension though, handles like a boat, less boaty than its siblings, still a boat.

Option 1, traction is an issue
Option 2, not that powerful
Option 3, uh.. not worth the trouble IMO.

I'd say go with Option 1 with Satria GTI or use Proton Putra and also do AWD conversion to handle the traction.

Thank u guys

Already converted Satria GTI and Satria Neo around rm25k

Currently i cannot think of other options that is cheap to buy and with good power.

Yes...Evo 3 engine is old, probably need to do full overhaul. If i am lucky, maybe can get Evo 3 engine with already loaded with high performance internals and supporting mods.

I set to spend another rm15,000 if the engine is still stock standard. With limited budget, i need to use cheaper aftermarket parts. Example using piggyback Greddy
e Manage Ultimate instead of high end Haltech. TD05-20G instead of modern Garrett GT series...and so on.

About 1.8T in Satria Neo, i dont think stock internals could handle 350 bhp, right?
If i go illegal way by using Evo 4 - 6 engines, the fate is likely i have to keep the Neo forever. To sell it is impossible since cannot pass Puspakom

Anyway. ..true ah can 'kawtim' with authority to make Neo Evo 4-6 legal? How much estimation?

I have driven a friend's 1.8T in a Wira for a number of hours at one point over a decade ago. Pretty basic mods like, like an exhaust, home made aquarium plumbing boost controller, and classic APEXI S-AFC here and RSM there, gotta love those things back in the late 90s.

I have to say i really enjoyed the car, it was reliable, had probably 200whp in it and was very usable. It was fast enough, not nearly as fast as the 2L turbo monsters then. but I think the key word is "usable" power. Then again, it's pretty limited how far you can explore with the 1.8 GSR engine

It depends how far you want to go though, anything 300hp above in a platform such as an FF Satria is thrilling definitely but can't be that enjoyable on the street

Power is quite addictive, when you only had 100hp you think 200hp would be good enough but then once you got it and get used to it, then you want 300hp and so on until you really feel it's becoming too scary fast then you stop there! I agree though, if the car is kept as a FWD then better just stay at around low 200hp mark, coz higher than that will give traction problems. That's why I said covert to AWD as well to handle even more power.

Why not look for a RWD car ? A basic BMW 325i E36 or E30 will be fun enough. You can play drifting with RWD too :) ... Or just stick with 190E with 1JZ auto swap. You can modify the autobox to take more punishment. I came across someside where the western guys did upgrade A340E to make it take more punishment at about 400hp.

Thanks

350hp at engine ...not at wheel, because i think it is safe max limit for stock internals like pistons and rods. Maybe just use TD05 good enough, with e-manage ultimate.

1JZ VVTI single turbo on RWD platform also very interesting, only let down by auto gearbox. Holset HX3540 turbo is good for 400bhp+ . 2JZ even better ...more torque from big engine to make nice power to weight ratio considering RWD platform is heavy. Again, the auto gearbox is not fun.

Difficult to decide

I like this. The E220 with 1JZ VVTI. Solid tank of a car with solid bullet proof engine. Will cost a lot more to maintain compared to the other 2 but I'd personally enjoy this car more than the others. But undoubtedly the other two will be a helluva lot better handling and a lot lighter.
