The Mclaren F1 is over 20 years old, and yet it remains unsurpassed in many areas except for going in a straight line. So while it still rocks our world, a replacement model has been long overdue, but us fans and potential owners have to wait no longer as Mclaren has confirmed it will launch a follow-up to the legend in 2012.

It has long been rumoured that a successor would be introduced somewhere in the middle of this decade but Mclaren chose to focus on setting up a new car company from scratch spearheaded by the development and marketing of the new MP4-12C.

However, things have now changed and according to a report by Autocar UK, Mclaren insiders are saying that the firm is working flat-out on a new F1, a car described as "revolutionary" and and one which will be instantly recognisable as such; in direct contrast to the MP4-12C, which has been criticised for its unadventurous styling.

While the original F1 was painstakingly developed over time by a passionate team of engineers that included legendary designer Gordon Murray, the new car is the subject of an intensive development program said to be among the speediest the industry has yet seen. This may leave room for mistakes but with Mclaren's immaculate attention to detail, we don't expect that to be a problem at all.

Like the MP4-12C, the new F1 will feature a carbon fiber monocoque and like all modern supercars bar some, it will be mid-engined.

The designers of the original F1 placed a major emphasis on saving weight, and the new car will also pioneer many new solutions in this field. In fact, the new car will bear many similarities to the original but what is not yet clear is whether the car will feature the same central driving position as its predecessor.

There's no word yet on the powertrain but we do know that Mclaren is working on its own engines, so there is a good chance of us seeing a new revolution in engine design with the new F1, potentially with enough power to punch a very large hole in the shape of a Veyron in the air.

When built, the F1 will be the second of Mclaren's trio of new models with the third thought to slot beneath the MP4-12C. There's no indication yet on the price of the F1 but you can expect it to fetch a princely sum but unlike it's limited edition older brother, the new F1 will be a regular series production car.
