BTW, what is the normal ratio used by B16a eg6/eg9 engines?

Think he means FD lar....

4.785 u will have better torque but poorer top speed....u will be like 3,800 rom at 110km/h
4.4 is the opposite
sure? i think its higher? or maybe its just me. currently im running on 4.4 fd and @ 5th gear, 3k rpm = 90 km/h already quite high if u ask me... furthermore vtec enthusiasts LOVE loud exhausts... so... good luck. hope ur in laws doesn't commute using ur car.

fd 4.785 cruissing 120kmh rpm at 4500k....fd 4.4 120kmh rpm at 4000k...difference only 500rpm...if you using S80 4.785 gbox...cruissing same with fd 4.4 bcoz 5th gear S80 4.785 ratio is smaller...

do agree with you on the 4th and 5th gear ratio difference. but what do you mean by cruising is the same??

and how about the acceleration difference between these two final drive ratio? if the acceleration difference is quite significant then the 500 rpm difference is considered marginal and acceptable.

well need to lose some to gain some right:wavey:

Agree wif u.Many people didn't noticed this but S80 gbox from dc2r 98 specs is expensive la.Trade in ur 4.4 gbox so can cover half of the cost.If u just put the 4.785 fd into ur eg9 stock gbox then it will be disaster at hway.Just feel like want to add one more gear je.

actually higher FD is for high revving cars.

a 4.785 on a stock Y21 with 8K rpm limit

1st gear (less than 60kmh)
2nd gear (less than 100kmh)
3rd gear (less than 140kmh
4th gear (less than 180kmh)

Not very nice numbers, isn't it?

As for the highway issue, it's not really a problem with the Final Drive, but more with the ratio of the individual gears, specifically the fifth gear.

If anyone has looked at the ratios from KAAZ, ATS, OS, mFactory etc. etc., you'd have notice their ratios are different. Some will run well with 4.2 FD, while some will need a 4.7-5.0FD. All depending on the individual gear ratio.

The gear ratio is used to depending on the torque band of the engine.

If you have a wide torque band engine, you can have RPM drop from 9K to 5K, so you can use a wider gearset (more speed gain before you shift)

If you have a narrow band torque engine, like the B16A/B, rev drops will usually want to be minimized, like maybe from 9K to 7-7.5K, since any less would be outside the peak torque range.
