the only conti I've driven is my old volvo, can't comment much about handling as it is more than 40 yrs old (1961 122s) but the body is solid as a rock. It was involved in an accident a few years ago with a japanese stationwagon and there was a loud bang. When I came out, the jap wagon's bumper was smashed but when I looked at the volvo, it only had some scratch marks without any dents.

One of my old fav conti is the merc 300CE coupe early-mid 90s model of the W124 series which I'm contemplating on my next car purchase other than the Fiat coupe turbo. Otner classic fav is the Merc 1960s gullwing roadster but it is out of my price range due to it being a collector's item (should be more than RM1 million by now).

Conti cars are:

1) Less ubiquitous and therefore stand out more
2) Usually solidly built
3) Great value when bought second hand. Far cheaper compared to the exorbitant Japs

However, because there are less of them, parts cost more. Also, maintenance may require specialized equipment which adds to the cost.

But you can pretty much minimize maintenance cost if you buy them as a weekend car and use a Kancil/motorcycle as your daily runabout! Hehehe...

I know, I did.

for a 20yr old guy i have driven lots of cars, from local, souped up jap cars n stock continental cars.

i really must say that conti cars have a lot of advantage n benefits

- the conti feel... its really very different compared to local n jap cars(hey, even British car got different feel than German car)
- the feel safe factor (rock solid, ppl whack my car i just lose a bumper, other guy lose the whole front)
- good n stable at high speeds not to mention awesome handling at high speeds
- awesome power n torque of a straight six(esp my 528i, too bad its an auto, if manual i'll b smoking souped up Jap cars)
- not much maintainace,(hey i own a 20yr old BMW n maintainace is a bottle of beer evy month) cheaper to maintain compared to my Jap car
-though resale value not very good, but cheap to buy once second hand or old...
-good project cars...
- like Tom said, if done up nicely, only few n the wise will really appreciate ur car
- dun really want my car to b compared against the "Ah Bengness Charts/Scale"
- styling is to my liking... the design of conti cars grow on u wif time

my dad also has a Merc CE300 24valve coupe n i must agree wif u that the car is a wonderful car...

though it might still look executive due to the big n bulky look, but its seriously a damn nice car... the engine is just so willing to pull but as usual, the infamous of acceleration lag in Mercs...the gearbox takes 2-3 seconds to downshift but after downshift the car just go, go n go...

cabin is old-school Merc... comfy n luxurious... nothing short of wat i would expect from the silver 3 pointed star badge.

nowadays, there is so much platform engineering, sharing of technology, merging of comapanies & buyouts...you really don't know what kind of hybrids or new models will be coming out... B)

saw the pics of your dad's ce. Looks awesome. I went to have a look at a 300CE recently, love the automatic seatbelts. The only thing that withheld me was the high road tax (RM3090 per year). MY friend says there's also 230CE but thats rare.

agree with all mostly on the feel, character and charisma. I had the opportunity to drive the Honda Accord 2.0, 2.4, Camry 2.0, Civic 2.0, some Korean cars.

No doubt they build good cars, but driving them feels "dead". They have good, smooth engine and gearbox but they are still no match when it comes to driving feel.

I have Triniti pressure plate and 6-puck disc but I don't like the vibration during engage.
I don't launch the car from start, hence, I am considering switching the clutch disc to something more comfortable.

I drove my friend's Iswara with an Exedy 3 puck with springs and it still feels pretty much the same, so I'm not so keen to go this route.

How about a full rounded one instead of 3/4/6 puck type? Are there any "semi-racing" clutch that is a...
