Dear All,

I am preparing to do the above for my Volvo S60 came with 6 Speed Powershift DCT with wet clutches. I know Powershift isn't the most durable DCT around but this one seems to serve me very well for over 100k km's.

Just want to know, can the clutches rebuilt by replacing the clutch packs or have to buy the whole assembly that cost a bomb. Generally what's the mileage for DCTs ? Read from the web it supposed to last the "LIFETIME" of the car, which i call bullshit as the clutches will worn, just slower than single clutch.

Thanks,
Ken

I have no idea, but I'm curious, why are you considering rebuilding it or replacing the clutch, is the drive being impacted?

Usually I recommend to burn it with fire and claim insurance, then buy another car. Since claiming total lost for a VW will payout more (agreed value) than selling it to a used car dealer or 2nd hand market ROFL. Last I remember, Volvo 2nd hand value not that great either.

Hi Ixeo,

No, driving is not impacted (touch wood) for now, but i would assume all clutches have lifespan, just that wet type dual clutches last much longer compared with dry type and does not have so much issues like the dry type. So far i took this car for a spirited drive all genting and the gearbox never missed gear change and acceleration is fantastic for 1.6 Turbo. I bought this car used, that means i didn't have to pay too much for it. So far i have done the below once i have got the car:

1.) Clean the intake valves - since this is a GDI engine
2.) Repair all oil leaks that i can find, so far i found 2 places, engine oil cooler seal and possibly oil sump/flywheel housing seal. Repaired the engine oil cooler seal as its the easier to access and leaked severly. Oil sump/flywheel housing seal needs more inspection.
3.) Burnout fan motor
4.) Replaced DCT oil and DCT filter

I just got quoted from a gearbox specialist, the clutch can be rebuild with aftermarket clutch packs from LUK Germany with OK prices. I am gathering info so that i am not caught by any stranded situation.

Thanks,
Ken

haha.... drink another 2 cups first.......
Taking second shot now. Go back to topic, i would say these DCTs really is a great innovation, just that the clutch replacement is pain in my ass, just like replacing a racing clutch in manual transmission.

Thanks,
Ken

I see. Having driven the DSG implementations on VW, I like the sporty feel of it, bang bang bang.

But I have to say, the 8 speed ZF in the BMW and other makes, is better than the DSG overall. Yes I’m biased.

The 8 speed ZF is phenomenal, i agree because i have driven a 328i F30, the shift is fast and seamless. Torque converter has come a very long way !

Yeah tell me about it. Old torque converters have a slushy feel like power kinda bottled up, whereas DSG is direct.

Is the Powershift in the Fiesta a wet clutch system as well? Just wondering.

VW 7 speed dsg didn’t feel clunky when I test drive the showroom cars. But my friend who owns it say good riddance. Can’t do stop & go at all. My brother’s golf gti mk5 was bullet proof until he sold it.

Ford Fiesta and Focus's are dry clutches. Where as Powershift in Volvo's are all wet clutches, so far only issue i had is cracked gasket about 100k kms that's all. The older GTI mk5 is a perfect DSG to me, i test drove it and the shift is much faster and seamless than Powershift, liked the DSG fart very much.

I believe it's the same powershift that they are using for the Ford 2.0TDCI engines which is good news for you since many reported to do 300k KM yet still driving smooth. Of course at these numbers you'd be looking to replace it soon but changing it at 100k KM isn't really necessary.

Many of the local guys with Focus 2.0 TDCI Powershift are doing 250k KM and some at 400k KM. Then again it all depends on luck & how you treat your baby!

As far as i can tell, the clutch is still working great still without slipping and stuffs. This gearbox looks like almost the same model with EVO X SST, since both came from the same factory. I don't really trash my car, driving up genting, i let the gearbox decide which gear to use and it never missed a gear or using wrong gear to climb.

Do you know any workshop within Klang Valley that can service this sort of gearbox when the clutch life is up?

Thanks,
Ken

There's this saying among the VW guys, if you don't thrash your DCT once in awhile then you are not taking care of it. Just like the ol reliable way of cleaning up carbon deposits, the Italian Tune up.

There's this workshop at TTDI, KL area that deals only Volvo but I'm not quite sure if they do anything related with the powershift. However, there's this workshop that deals with Ford Powershift and is pretty popular among the Ford guys called Bengkel Excellent Auto. You may want to give them a ring to ask bout the Volvo's powershift. I believe its similar with the Ford Focus 2.0TDCI and Ford Mondeo Ecoboost Powershift.
