Despite the scorching sun, morale was high among the participants. The mangrove seedling planting activity was actually more fun than initially anticipated, in addition to the fact that this deed provides a symbolic significance to the Malaysian ecological conservation impetus.

As the convoy headed out, efficiently facilitated by the Royal Malaysian Police escorts, of Kampung Sungai Acheh, there is at least a sense of fulfilment for the Shell Helix Invasion Tour 2011. The single file made the 50-odd vehicle convoy stretch out for a least one kilometre on its way to the next official stop; Juru Autocity in Prai, Penang.

Juru Autocity was already abuzz with activity when the supercar entourage reached the designated parking lots; apparently there was an audio and autoshow competition happening right beside the parking lot where the supercars were parked, which drew a large amount of the public to the Shell Helix Invasion Tour 2011 convoy. The entry of the convoy could not have been more dramatic, as the glorious sounds of the supercars were amalgamated beautifully with the energetic, bassy tunes from the audioshow.

For a rather late lunch, the entourage was whisked to the nearby Pizza Hut outlet where they were amply fed with nearly 30 large plates of freshly-prepared pizzas.

There, the participants had another opportunity to mingle with each other, abetted by the modern wonder that is the air-conditioner. Needless to say, the stop gave the entourage an opportunity to relax, given the long drives from the first phase of Leg 2. As the convoy stopped over at PIFWA for quite some time, the stop at Juru Autocity was relatively brief.

After lunch, the participants headed off to their respective cars, formed another single-file convoy, and headed out of Juru Autocity to the next stop; Shell station at Fortune Park along Jalan Perusahaan Jelutong on Penang Island.

That, of course, means that the convoy has to cross Penang’s eponymous and iconic bridge. Thanks to the police escorts, the convoy was able to scurry past the Seberang Prai toll plaza and head past Penang Bridge. Traffic on the bridge was sparse because the police closed a large part to allow for some space, and inducing some drivers to open the taps on the supercars.

After the bridge, the convoy headed north towards Georgetown via the Jelutong Expressway, made a u-turn at the Sungai Pinang Avenue/Jelutong Expressway intersection before congregating at the Shell station.

The quantity of supercars in the convoy once again got public eyes and ears facing that direction, with some of the petrol station’s patrons parking at the side of the road to admire and take some snapshots of the supercars.

Once the entire convoy was filled up, the entourage made the trip to the final destination of the Shell Helix Invasion Tour 2011; Shangri-la’s Rasa Sayang Resort in Batu Ferringhi.

The route there, though, was a tad more scenic than what an average Penangite would take, passing through inner Georgetown; Weld Quay, Light Avenue, Sultan Ahmad Shah Road, Burma Road, through Gurney Drive (Kelawai Road), and finally via Tanjung Tokong and Tanjung Bungah towards Batu Ferringhi.

The sheer volume of the convoy made it especially tricky when moving past the city centre, but the drivers were quite capable of snaking past the narrow lanes, sometimes in between to-and-fro traffic. The build-up of traffic where the convoy passed were thankfully mitigated by the traffic policemen and mobile escorts, expediting the arrival time by at least 2 hours.

In all, it took the entire entourage about 45 minutes from the Jelutong Expressway to Batu Ferringhi, during rush hour, which may be a small record of sorts. The usual banner welcomed the guests as the supercars entered Rasa Sayang Resort, parking at and around the lobby reception area. The rest of the convoy were directed to the beachfront Golden Sands Resort, also a part of the Shangri-la group of hotels.

Once the supercars were all parked and were ticking themselves cool, the participants got to the mundane but necessary task of checking into the hotels.

The participants then took the opportunity to freshen and dress up (or down, depending on perspective) for the dinner by the beach at the aptly-named Sigi’s Bar & Grill on the Beach at about 8 in the evening.

Dinner was buffet style, with a delicate mix of Western and Asian offerings, but the most prominent aspect of dinner was its setting.

Imagine a bunch of people, sitting, eating, laughing, and chatting by the beach, on the sand, with finely prepared tables, chairs and tents. Now imagine dinner being illuminated by candlelight, accompanied by the melodies of popular songs from a live band, coupled with the peaceful sensation of sea breezes blowing by.

Yes… very nice indeed.

The participants were having loads of fun getting to know one another, share their experiences during the drive, and also goofing around after dinner.

They also took the opportunity to get some photographs taken as a momento of the occasion.

Not surprisingly, dinner took a major portion of the evening away, and it was then time to head to Sixty9ine Mansion, a nearby hybrid water/by-the-beach themed club.

There the participants continued enjoying their evening, this time to the sounds of electronica, house and techno numbers.

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that Sixty9ine Mansion is a bit unique given that patrons are able to partially submerge their legs while chilling out in a shallow pool of water, and also swim in a pool connecting the interior and the exterior of the club. There are also miniature, storey-high waterfalls around the pool which not only convey a dichotomous sense of tranquillity and loud music, but also serve to cool the exterior parts of the club.

Sunday was a lazy and slow one; many of the participants were understandably fatigued by the extensive agenda the previous day. Breakfast was served at the hotels, but many of the participants took the chance to head towards the city centre for authentic Penang food as well.

The convoy began preparing for their South-bound journey at about noon, and that was when the lobby of Rasa Sayang Resort came alive with the now-familiar sounds of vehicular exotica. The entourage had lunch at Pelita Tandoori House before they proceeded with their journey back to Kuala Lumpur.

Thus, the two-week long Shell Helix Invasion Tour 2011 campaign comes to a successful and fruitful completion.
