Ever since it made its debut at the Beijing Motor Show last year, the impressive Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept has been gaining extra attention throughout the year. And it seems that the hype will not be dying out even as we usher in 2015 as at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show, Volkswagen proceeded to share more good news on this hot hatch.
Speaking to Autocar, Volkswagen technical chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser himself said that the R400 was undergoing “conceptual work and we’re in front of a decision to produce it”. “I personally think we have a good prospect to do it,” and at the same time adding that the production version will be very similar to the concept shown.
The R400 was developed by Volkswagen’s R Division where they aim at showcasing their engineering expertise and at the same time highlighting their range of customization. This concept was built around the Golf R and it seems that Volkswagen is putting cars like the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, BMW M235i and the Audi RS3 in sights.
Powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder EA888 petrol engine found in the Golf R, it has been tweaked to produce 395bhp at 7,200rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a six-speed DSG transmission, the Golf R400 concept can do a zerotohundred in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 280km/h.
