Conquering 2010-2012′s NA-FF Class at TIMETOATTACK in Team Kazama Drive M7′s Honda FD2R, Lai Wee Sing has since moved on to the darkside! – He now pilots a R35 GTR and will represent his own entity, R-Engineering. A recently established tuning house based in Johor Bahru, south of Malaysia. R-Engineering is also one of the very few tuning shops in JB with an in-house dyno facility.

Team Ascendant Motorsport, a loyal follower of the TIMETOATTACK since 2010 had made great progress in last year’s season with Arthur Lo’s R35 GTR, at 4th place clocking a 2:25.807 lap time in our Top 20 Fastest Hall of Fame! At this Sunday’s Round 1, Arthur will be back with some tricks up his sleeves, going against tough GTR Competion this time around.

Guess what? Something rare is about to hit Sepang this weekend. The Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale. Not one, but TWO! ~ Only 150 of thisraging bulls were produced, and 2 of only a handful in Malaysia will be attacking Sepang this Sunday.

Based on the Super Trofeo race car setup, the Stradale is nothing less like its racing brother, only made to go over speed bumps. The STS is set to go head-2-head against its closest competitor, the Ferrari 430 Scuderia during the TIMETOATTACK stint in the Supercar category.

Happenings: Infiniti Roadshow from the 15th-19th May

Infiniti is currently having a roadshow at The Gardens Shopping Mall, Mid Valley to showcase their 2 award winning models – The FX37 and M25. The roadshow began 2 days ago, and will go on until Sunday, 19th May from 10am to 10pm. As a guidance, their booth can be found in front of Isetan at the ground floor.

The FX37 is Infiniti’s mid-size crossover SUV, which packs some punch. 320horses of it in fact. If you are an avid follower of F1, you may have heard that there’s also a soup’ed up version of the FX model named after the 2 time F1 champion, Sebastian Vettel. The M25 sedan on the other hand is Infiniti’s answer to the BMW 5-series and Audi A6. At 350k, the M25 packs some luxury and will run from zerotohundred in 7.5 seconds.

So, if you happen to be in the vicinity, take a walk to The Gardens now and experience what Infiniti has to offer in the flesh.

Porsche Driving Experience 2013

Yesterday, we were at Sepang for Porsche’s Driving Experience 2013. Porsche organizes this event every year allowing participants to understand their cars, as well as their limits, better. Porsches are renowned for having a slew of acronyms – PDK, PTM, PSM, PDCC, etc and Porsche Driving Experience (PDE) was developed to help us understand how these all worked in the real world. The day’s activities consisted of several challenges: skid pad, brake, moose and slalom, and included some driving time on-track as well. Each challenge was designed to showcase individual capabilities of Porsche’s tech and concept.

Skid Pad

This challenge was designed to help develop the driver’s car control skills, as well as helping them understand the car’s driving dynamics. The skid pad provides a safe environment for participants to experience the limits of adhesion, and driver’s had to learn the causes of oversteer and understeer, and how to react and control these scenarios. The mid-engined Boxster S was the vehicle of choice here; its low center of gravity, poise and agility all ideal on this course. PSM (Porsche Stability Management) was also activated, giving first hand experience on how the system worked to allow the driver to regain control of the car.

Brake

At the brake challenge, participants learnt how to effectively carry out full braking, whilst exploiting the vehicle’s anti-lock braking system, mid-steer. Accelerating hard, we had to avoid an obstacle, before stamping hard on the brakes to a stop within the stopping area. This challenge was dispatched in a Cayenne GTS and was designed to showcase PTM (Porsche Traction Management).

PTM is an active all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled variable, map-controlled multi-plate clutch, automatic brake differential (ABD), and anti-slip regulation (ASR). Torque is distributed between front and rear axles for optimum traction in all road scenarios, whether on long straights or through tight corners. If the system detects that one wheel is about to lose traction, PTM uses the ABD function to apply corresponding brake force. ASR on the other hand will intervene to modify engine output to maintain drive, when both wheels on one axle are in danger of slipping.

Moose

Here, the driver will have the opportunity to practice high speed maneuvering through a series of offset gates. Visual skills and hand-foot coordination are developed as driver’s manage the vehicles weight transfer. Our test vehicle for this was the Cayenne S Diesel which tips the scales at over two tonnes, so there’s really quite a bit of weight. Through this exercise, the driver will get the experience the effectiveness of PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control) and PSM (Porsche Stability Management).

PDCC is an anti-roll system which anticipates and significantly reduces lateral body movement when cornering, with the aid of the active anti-roll bars that feature hydraulic swivel motors on both front and rear axles. This system responds to current steering angle and lateral acceleration by producing a stabilizing force that precisely negates the swaying force of the body, keeping the vehicle stable through bends. With these driver aids turned on, the benefits are greater agility, more responsive steering, stable load characteristics, and enhanced occupant comfort.

Slalom

Perhaps the most fun part of the day was the Slalom challenge. The obstacle was a scaled down racetrack with a series of corners which challenges the driver through all elements – cornering, braking, and acceleration. It also served as a warm up prior to heading down on-track. PSM helps to maintain stability, even at the limits of dynamic driving performance. A series of sensors work to continuously monitor the direction, speed, yaw, velocity and lateral acceleration of the vehicle, to calculate the actual direction of travel at any given moment. In scenarios where there is oversteer or understeer, PSM applies selective braking on an individual wheel to restore stability. Under acceleration on surfaces with low grip, PSM helps to improve both traction and agility, making use of both ABD, ASR as well as engine drag torque control (MSR).

For the more adventurous, engaging Sport PLUS mode will delay PSM intervention, to allow for a sportier driving style. We had the base Panamera here and despite its size and weight, managed to dance its way around the cones. All drivers are timed through the slalom with the quickest through the bends winning a prize. The fastest time of the day was 38.8s whilst I only managed a sub 40s timing.

Track driving on Sepang

The final event of the day was driving on Sepang itself – here, participants had the chance to implement everything they learnt from the day’s earlier exercises. On the grid were some fully-loaded Porsches which included the latest 911 C2S and C4S, Boxster S, and the Cayman S (which was launched earlier this week). All the cars were equipped with a 7-speed PDK (Porsche Duppelkupplung); essentially two gearboxes in one, with two clutches. The cars also came spec’d with PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake) – identified by the car’s yellow calipers. PCCBs are 50% lighter than standard discs, and enables shorter braking distances; a huge plus when driving on-track. We were allowed to flow through Sepang at our own paces, with an instructor on-board to advise on our driving lines and braking points.

All-in, it was certainly quite an experience. Porsche have so much tech in their cars, and their driving experience certainly helped us understand not just how they worked, but also how to react in certain scenarios. Like one of their instructors said, you just never know when a fridge might fall off a moving lorry. Porsche Driving Experience will take place from 16-18th of May and on the 19th, Sepang will host Zerotohundred’s #TimeToAttack, so you’ll be getting a lot of updates from here!

BMW ‘accidentally’ leaks M5 F10 facelift in configurator

Not too long ago, Car paparazzis or… ‘Carparazzis’ spotted the facelifted BMW M5 F10 with very light camouflage to hide away it’s updates. Then recently, it seems that BMW may have ‘accidentally’ leaked the looks of the new facelift online. Where? – in their car configurator!~

These pics are from Bimmer Today, a German forum which managed to quickdraw on these images when it was uploaded by mistake to BMW’s german website, bmw.de online configurator. Perhaps in the midst of updating their website, this picture was uploaded and accidentally published.

The new F10 M5 may look the same on first glance, only because the changes are rather subtle. The most obvious would be the new ‘kidney grille’, with twin-lines and tagged together with an M5 badge. Also, there are very light design updates on the headlamps and tail lamps as well. The interior shows that the M5 will come with a new steering wheel, also similar like the one in the M6 F13.

This new facelift won’t be launched until end of this year, which is a relatively short run for the current F10 M5 which was release at the end of 2011. Updates are not a bad thing though, keeping the car fresh and up to date.

Rumours says that there will be an M5 F10 in ‘Competition Pack’ form on the way. Of course, this package will be a little more hardcore, with firmer suspension and possibilities of an increased output. But as of now, BMW’s 4.4 litre twin-turbo remains, which packs 552 horses and 501 lb ft of torque.

The super-saloon selection is about to get more interesting, with the new Audi RS7 and Mercedes AMG’s new E63 AMG S-model with added power, let’s hope the ‘Competition Pack’ rumour materialises too!

Coming in 2nd in TIMETOATTACK’s Top 20 Fastest Men Hall of Fame at 2:24.276 on a less than ideal Hot Lap, he’s confident in shaving off precious seconds this Sunday. MY13 Cayman arrives: choice of two flat-six engines, six-speed manual as standard.

Some will say that the Cayman is an interpretation of a hard-top Boxster, but I’ve never agreed with that ideology. The Cayman is more focused, faster and with that fixed roof, has always had a completely different agenda than the Boxster. But when it comes to power and performance, the Cayman sits squarely in between the Boxster and 911. Launched at Zebra Sq in KL yesterday evening, this new iteration of Cayman promises an even smaller gap between the three models. Also breaking cover together with the Cayman were the Cayenne S Diesel and Cayenne Turbo S models.

Taking cues from both the Boxster and 911, the all-new Cayman features many improvements – longer wheelbase, shorter overhangs, wider track, lightweight body design, and better efficiency figures as well. There will be two choices of powerplants: a 2.7-litre Cayman (275PS/290Nm/5.7secs) and a 3.4-litre Cayman S (325PS/370Nm/5.0secs). Although the standard Cayman has a smaller displacement than its predecessor, the 2.7-litre mill is the first Cayman to break the 100hp/litre barrier. Peak power is up by 10hp and 5hp at a higher 7,400rpm for the base and S models respectively. Standard tech, specific to our Malaysian market now includes bi-xenons adaptive headlamps, adaptive cruise control (ACC), as well as a specially developed Burmester sound system.

Porsche-philles will be glad to note that a six-speed manual transmission comes as standard, with the seven-speed PDK an optional upgrade. Most Caymans (Caymen?) sold are bound to have been specced with PDK boxes, but for the proper enthusiast, this new Cayman will be the only car in the Porsche line-up which allows them to get their hands dirty. That said, the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) remains a super quick and efficient bit of engineering, with the latest generation featuring better performance and economy figures.

In the dynamics department, Porsche have worked their magic to ensure there’s dynamic performance and agility, but also comfort as well as everyday driveability. standard chassis with conventional hydraulic, gas-filled shock absorbers has been completely redesigned. The front axle with optimised lightweight design MacPherson spring struts has been redesigned. Its new struts are more compact than those of the previous model, making them stiffer and more precise in maintaining camber. New, lightweight aluminium support bearings for the struts isolate the forces transferred to the shock absorbers and auxiliary springs for even better chassis tuning. The front axle cross members have also been designed to be optimized for crash strength and rigidity.

Improved anti-dive characteristics reduce the degree to which the body front section dives during full braking and shortens the braking distance. The rear suspension was developed based on the previous version. As with the front suspension, many components were made lighter, but without compromising stiffness and rigidity. The suspension components consist primarily of aluminium. For reasons of stiffness, components exposed to high stresses are made of sheet steel and are thus lighter and more compact than comparable light metal components.

But what about its looks? Visually, I never gelled with the previous generation Cayman, but I have to say that the new car looks better. However, I will admit that, roof aside, I now have trouble identifying Cayman from Boxster. From a low-angled front view, the only telling signs seem to be the LEDs and air-intake. There’s no doubt that this new car is more appealing, but I wish more effort was put to giving it a more individual flair – especially when Porsche has openly claimed the Cayman to be a stand-alone model.

Base prices for the Cayman and Cayman S starts from RM500k and RM610k respectively, and by now our readers should know just how extensive the options, as well as prices, can get. We’ll have a first impression of how the Cayman and Cayman S drives later this week, so do stay tuned to us for our report and more detailed pictures.
