Mitsubishi Pulls Out Of Dakar Rally And Other Races

Mitsubishi joins makers like Honda, Audi, Porsche, Suzuki, Subaru, and Kawasaki in pulling out of some form of motorsports because of… well, do we really need to say it? Neither the Mitsubishi Pajeros that won the Dakar Rally twelve times in total (out of 26 attempts), nor the diesel Racing Lancer that earned a seventh place in this year’s race, will be seen plying the sands again any time soon. The Japanese automaker has ended its factory efforts in order to focus on its core business. Having stamped its red rhombus logo all over the Dakar after seven consecutive Dakar victories, its presence will be sorely missed come 2010. Official press release after the jump. Read more

Mitsubishi Developing Lancer Evo X Racer With 400hp

Mitsubishi’s UK arm recently announced that it is developing a race-going version of its new Lancer EVO X, with which it plans to participate in the Britcar Championship and a one-make race-series in the near future. The race-prepped Lancer EVO X will make its first public appearance at the Britcar 24-hour race at Silverstone on September 20th & 21st driven by the company’s managing director and former BTCC regular James Kaye along with two other drivers who are yet to be named. Rumour: Mitsubishi Building Lancer SportBack CrossOver

Rumour has it that the bosses over at Mitsubishi are considering offering a Lancer Sportback Crossover to international markets by 2010. Essentially a Mitsubishi Lancer with a redesigned rear end and an increased ride height, the new model will also come equipped with a restyled fascia and protective body panels similar to those found on the old Subaru Outback and Audi Allroad. Federal Government Purchases 10 Mitsubishi Evo’s – For Police Cars?

This got us baffled, a report at MySinChew indicated that a fleet management company, Spanco, has signed a deal in June of this year to supply the government with 2,500 Proton Waja’s and 10 Mitsubishi Evolution’s. Why would they ever need such cars is beyond us, maybe they finally decided to sponsor Karamjit Singh, which we highly doubt so, or maybe the bad guys are getting away much easier these days, hence the raise in crime rates. Mazda kept the rotary engine concept when other manufacturers had abandoned it. However, Dr Felix Wankel’s mechanical innovation does work to full effect. A rotary engine has triangular rotors which spin within epi-trochoidal housings, instead of conventional pistons, and it tends to get smoother and more powerful the faster it rotates. It also has the benefit of being compact and lightweight – and Mazda is able to squeeze 231bhp out of a twin-rotor unit of just 1308cc capacity. Read more
