The Swedish marque has just unveiled the all-road version of their famed wagon, the V90 Cross Country.

"With All-Wheel Drive, increased ride height and a chassis optimised for comfort and control in all weather and road conditions, the new V90 Cross Country takes our versatile V90 estate and adds the heart of an explorer,” said Dr Peter Mertens, senior vice-president for research and development at Volvo Cars.

Exterior

Basically, the V90 Cross Country now ride higher while retaining all the good bits from the base car. It wears plastic body cladding around the bumpers, wheel arches and side sills, together with silver skid plates at the front and rear. There’s also ‘Cross Country’ lettering embossed on the rear bumper.

The front adds black gloss finishing and a fancier grille. Volvo’s current design language, “Thor’s hammer” design element remains in the headlights. Black gloss also supersedes metallic trim around windows for a sleeker side profile. The wheels and tyres are now wider and softer to tackle uneven surfaces.

Interior

The interior is primarily unchanged, retaining the V90’s Scandinavian-inspired minimalist design. The centre console gets a portrait-format touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, and pearl stitching on the dashboard adds further details.

As for the boot space, the V90 Cross Country is able to contain 560 litres and is expandable to 1,526 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Engine

The V90 Cross Country will be powered by engine choices ranging from both petrol- and diesel-powered units. Petrol are available in two forms. T5 which produces 254hp and 350Nm of torque and the supercharged T6, boasting 320hp and 400Nm of torque. However, no further details on the hybrid T8 Twin Engine configuration for now.

On the oil-burner side, the all-roader comes in D4 and D5 options, capable of 190hp/400Nm and 235hp/480Nm respectively. The D5 gets an innovative PowerPulse system that is designed to improve engine response. It employs an air compressor and a pressurized tank to feed air into the turbo.

An 8-speed automatic is standard across the range, but the D4 gets an option for a 6-speed manual.

Chassis

To fit all-road performance and capability, the Cross Country’s ground clearance has been raised, apart from increased approach and departure angles to improve its drivability on steep and uneven surfaces. The V90 Cross Country is equipped with double-wishbone up front and an integral rear link with a composite leaf spring at the rear, similar to the V90. Optional rear air suspension and Four-C adaptive damping are also available.

In addition to the existing Eco, Comfort, Dynamic and Individual driving modes, there’s also a new Rough Road setting for the Cross Country. Hill Descent Control will also be offered. Four-wheel drive system is a BorgWarner unit, with front-biased setup in normal driving and can send up to 50% of torque to the rear axles when necessary.
