If there is a list of manufacturers that will try their best to hide their new models from the public, one of them will definitely be Ferrari. Sure, there is going to be occasional rendering leaks and spyshots making their rounds on the net like the upcoming F12 ‘GTO’, but there was just no luck spared for the Spider version of the 488 GTB.

Supposedly making an appearance in flesh at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, the new 488 Spider just got its ‘unofficial’ unveiling when it was caught undisguised and uncovered in China. This turbocharged Stallion was spotted in the city of Nanjing in the Jiangsu province and is speculated to be used for an employee training session since it is parked in front of a Maserati dealership.

While the 488 Spider in Ferrari’s official images does look stunning, it sure looks sexier in real life and in white or Bianco Avus. Though this early appearance of “the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever built” garnered quite a number of positive responses, we doubt that the person in charge of keeping it under covers will get the same treatment from Ferrari themselves.

As a recap, the 488 Spider will still get the same 3.9-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine making out 660-horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. The spaceframe chassis used is made out of 11 different aluminium alloys combined with other noble materials, one of which is magnesium. This combination offers same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness figures as the 488 GTB with 25-percent improved chassis performance. It takes only 14 seconds for the retractable hard top to fold backwards in two overlapping sections.
