Porsche to make their future 911 GT3 lighter and not more powerful?

From time to time, we know that the future models from makers like Ferrari, McLaren or Lamborghini will feature outputs that are significantly higher than its successors. But in a surprising statement from the guys at Stuttgart, it seems that they are no longer interested in the power output race and instead will be channelling their efforts in making their cars lighter.

It seems that the power race has led to the frustration of Porsche’s GT division boss Andreas Preuninger and has spoken about the successor of their current GT3. In an interview with Car Magazine, he said that when it comes to the future of the GT3, losing weight will be the priority and not adding up power.

This comes from his personal opinion as he is not a believer in mega-horsepower monsters and the optimal output for a GT3 is about 500-horsepower. Once a car gets an output in the range of 700-800 horses, it will lead to the need for bigger brakes, heftier suspension setup, which all leads to an overall increase of weight.

So if things go as how Preuninger wanted, maybe we could expect the future GT3 to gain a tad more power, but it will definitely be lighter. And also according to him, the future GT3 line up will maintain a naturally aspirated power plant instead of a turbocharged version, and a manual transmission is also being hinted as well.
