After a magnificent display of speed and power back in the 2014 World Finals, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo returns to Malaysia for its third leg of the Asia Series. But instead of returning to the 5.543-kilomoter Sepang International Circuit, Lamborghini decided to show their support towards Malaysia’s first street circuit and joined in the fun of the 2015 KL City GP.
And for the 2015 edition of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Race series, Lamborghini has a new breath of change awaiting the fans as the old and trusty Gallardo race cars have been replaced with the new successor, the Huracan LP 620-2 Super Trofeo. As you can see from the designation, the race car gains 10 more horsepower compared to the road car and all of the power are sent to the rear wheels to give the drivers a taste of GT3 driving.
Couple these up with a bumpy and sometimes slippery street circuit, what you will get is a bunch of twitchy bulls being extra cautious from getting too close to the barriers. But does that mean the drivers will be holding it back a notch? Not a bit as the howls of the mighty V10s could be heard miles away, echoing in between the tall skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur.
In Race 1, #88 Kazuki Hiramine took the win for the Pro-AM category after starting the race beside pole sitter #8 Yuan Bo/Edoardo Liberati after 30 laps of intense racing.
The Japanese clearly dominated the race as #12 Toshiyuki Ochiai and #23 Yudai Uchida took third and fourth respectively, followed by our own #33 Afiq Yazid in fifth.
In the AM category, #7 Kimura Takeshi took the win with #39 Akira Mizutami/Hajime Noma trailing behind. Finishing in third was the duo of #68 Michael Choi/Keith Chan.
Eyeing for a better finish, #33 Afiq Yazid now aims to take a podium spot and possibly a win by starting at pole position in Race 2. However, his hopes of even finishing the race was quickly diminished by an accident at the start of the race which eventually led him to miss the KL City Cup race as well.
In a race riddled with safety cars, the duo of #37 Anthony Liu/Davide Rizzo made the amazing jump from 16th on the grid to taking the win for Race 2. Coming in second was #12 Toshiyuki Ochiai followed by #24 Dilantha Malagamuwa/Amraan Ebrahim.
Down in the AM category, the duo of #18 Andrew Haryanto/Fitra Eri overtook #68 Michael Choi/Keith Chan to steal the win in Race 2. #28 Vincent Wong/Byron Tong settled for second place and #39 Akira Mizutami/Omaccha 9 took home third place.
