What is Tokyo Auto Salon without the JDMs right? Afterall – it is in Japan and their domestically marketed cars are scattered everywhere on the roads, its like an enthusiasts’ wet dream walking around the streets and car parks over there. Spread along the 13 floors inhabits more than 200 highly modified Japanese whips and in this ‘Part 2’ section of our TAS14 coverage, we are showing you which one caught our attention during our 3 day adventure in Makuhari Messe.
Let’s begin with the Nismo GTR. Why? Because it is easily the fastest car at Tokyo Auto Salon. We can disregard Smokey’s V12 Supra because that is just a high speed cruise missile, but the Nismo GTR is the ultimate Nissan GTR ever, lapping the treacherous Nürburgring with a mind boggling time of 7 minutes and 8 seconds!
Check out those sexy rear lights.. A beauty to behold..
In this shade, we think it definitely looks menacing and scary! Imagine seeing that in your rear view mirror… *goosebumps*
At the same time – Rocket Bunny had also JUST unveiled their GTR widebody kit and this is what it looks like. Certainly a highlight at the show and fitted with Volk’s latest TE37 Ultra wheels, it sets to push the epicness bar to over 11.
Or if you’re not too much into bodykits – then Top Secret’s GTR projects would inspire you. Pushing about 1000bhp and painted with Top Secret’s signature Gold; you’d probably want a piece of that action on the road!
The VR38-DETT tuned up and all set up for the high speed run.
Also alongside at Top Secret’s booth were Smokey Nagata’s mad V12 Supra that has gotten him in so much trouble with the ‘rozzers’. Although we don’t approve of the reworked frontal look, we do like what lives under the carbon fibre. And a Rocket Bunny GT86 which looks surprisingly good in the signature Gold.
The view of what lives under the hood. Hardcore V12 strapped with two humongous Turbos that’ll tickle your fancy every time the boost kicks in. With this – the Supra will do over 400km/h where the road permits.
Also taking the spotlight on the convention floor is Top Fuel’s World Time Attack Challenge Honda S2000 Amuse GT1 which looks absolutely crazy! Those front splitters will save you seconds on the run.
Dubbed as the S2000RR – it smudged the record off the ‘tuner car lap record’ around Fuji Speedway last year and reset the timing with a 1:40.905. Pushing 800+bhp; it placed 5th overall at WTAC 2013 with a time of 1:28.866.
The heart that powers it all! Sporting a huge GTX3582R Garrett Turbo, it pushes 802bhp at 7100rpm. Trouble is a good word here..
The japs are absolutely great at ‘Car Humour’. Heres that Supra we all saw in 2Fast2Furious, however although it looks like a Supra.. look again!
What it is actually is a Suzuki Cappuccino that went for a plastic surgery and had its head and butt reworked to look like a Supra. It certainly looks like those mini cars people photoshop on the internet.. except its real here.
Amongst the many transformation that gored our mind was this. An MR-2 completely reworked and customised to look like a Bugatti Veyron. Its a sad thing to do to a timeless classic – but the work done on this is certainly detailed!
But not all transformations are for the worse at TAS14. We certainly adored this one RPS13 that had a party piece up its sleeves. I bet you couldn’t have guessed it..
Look again! Thats a VR38-DETT in an RPS13. Yes – the Japs are mad when it comes to their cars and this mad transformation will stand as one of the epic ones. What do you think of it?
Another favourite that took the spotlight was this Skyline Hakosuka. Although we’ve all probably seen it on many different sites about this Hako made by Rocky Auto – its presence here is still a highlight nevertheless!
With an RB26 transplanted into the heart – the custom work done on this example is definitely like no other. Most definitely a different route in restoration rather than the usual “Back to Factory” refurbishment, Rocky Auto went all #becauseracecar on this Hako. Stripped interior, Powerful engine.
Famously known for their unorthordox restorations and epic classic collections of Hakosuka and Kenmeri Skylines, Rocky Auto is no newbie in the automotive scene. The mastermind, Watanabe-San enjoys the ‘out of the ordinary’ things and the two Kenmeri Skylines you see above, one of it did not begin life as a KPGC110.
In fact – it actually started life as an R32 Skyline. Which is why the RB26 is still left in the engine bay but having the original side-by-side; the only tell tale sign that they are different is the interior. Beautifully crafted.
You’d be surprise how famous the Toyota Chaser is over in Japan. Known for its 1JZ heart – its a cult favourite, running it between two different modes of either speed or stance. Either way, we too enjoy a dose of Chasers and heres to share a few that caught our attention.
Whilst the crowd was crowding in the halls – we took a quick breath out in the air. In a far distance though, we heard the sound of engines and screeching tyres..
TAS14 marks the kick-off of D1 Grand Prix and it was a show on its own alongside at the car park of Makuhari Messe. Despite the relatively feel of D1 GP’s deterioration in the automotive scene – its always good to know that the sport is still going strong, and it certainly helped relive our thoughts.
The D1 GP demo began around late noon and it was perfect timing as we were beginning to miss the smell of burnt rubber and fuel from the continuous indulgence in the convention halls..
It was also great to see famous and familiar faces like Daigo Saito around to help keep the momentum of the event going! This was where Daigo really made his name.. D1 GP.
Let’s head back inside and take a look at some drift cars..
It was awesome to get up close and personal with Mad Mike’s own crazy FD3S RX-7. Running 3 rotors, this is his set of wheels used whenever he is in Japan. We know that he’s running 1 more FD3S and an RX-8; the man really loves is Rotary.
How about this drift ready R34..? This car intrigued many of the visitors with its mad styling and colour combo. But the beauty is more than just skin deep as this R34 is packed with over 600bhp on taps to keep it sideways all night..
Let’s end this part of our TAS14 coverage with something absolutely out of the ordinary..
What you see here is a BMW 6-series that isn’t what you think..
Because its actually a Toyota Supra. As mad as we all think this is – a bold example like this is what defines Tokyo Auto Salon. It’s all about making turning imagination into life and they have all certainly brought to life so many amazing kind of vehicles..
