Back in 2011, British rally champion Mark Higgins had set an astonishing record by blasting through the 60-kilometer Isle of Man TT Road Course in just 19 minutes and 56.7 seconds with an average speed of 181.7 km/h in the Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Although that is already mightily fast, the champion tried his luck this year with the new 2015 Subaru WRX STI and once again managed to break the record.

Driving the 2015 Subaru WRX STI, Higgins recorded a lap time of 19 minutes and 26 seconds with an average speed of 187.4 km/h. Even so, he admitted that he could have done better in the record-breaking run.

“It was quite a lap we did today and I am really happy to have another record in the bank. The chassis on this new car is so much better it really allowed me to pick up in each sector in the more technical part of the course,” said Higgins.

“I think there is definitely time that we left on the course. I lost time on the second part of the track, overshooting my braking point at Sign Post corner. I actually hand-braked the turn in the end, so I feel we can definitely do better”.

The US-spec 2015 WRX STI was mostly stock, with the exception of the FIA-spec roll cage, racing seat and harness, fire suppression system, high decibel straight exhaust, the modified springs and dampers “to handle the sustained high speeds and changing conditions of the course”, and the Dunlop Direzza tires.
