Mazda Harnessing the Diesel Power with their SKYACTIV-Powered Prototypes!

Merging the American Le Mans Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series together, the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship will be the platform where Mazda’s new diesel-powered prototype will display its prowess. After teasing the community with an initial photo last year, they had finally release a full specification of their new endurance machine.

Unveiled at the “Road Before the 24” test at Daytona International Speedway earlier this month, two of such machine will be fielded by Mazda with four drivers behind the wheels. After delivering nine race wins and the 2013 Grand-Am GX Manufacturers Championship for Mazda, Sylvain Tremblay and Tom Long will share the #70 car while the combination of Joel Miller and Tristan Nunez will be in the #07 car.

The prototype is powered by a 2.2-liter diesel engine and with the help of a turbocharger from Garrett Motorsports, it has 450-horsepower and 580 lb-ft of torque. All the power is sent to the rear tires via Xtrac’s six-speed sequential unit with paddle shifters. With a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, the prototype only weighs 900 kgs (without driver and fuel), and it could hit a top speed of approximately 300km/h.

Mazda said that the SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel race engine is a true production-based engine as it is 51-percent stock by parts count, and 63-percent stock by weight.
