How do you define a sleeper? If something that looks totally tame on the outside but is a wild contraption on the inside, then this Toyota Camry definitely fits the bill. Of course, when we are pointing out that this is a sleeper, you would expect to see it housing something like a twin-turbocharged 2JZ engine lifted from a Supra with 600+ horsepower. Not in this Camry.
In fact, what resides in (or actually underneath) this 2015 Camry Sleeper is a purpose-built dragster, propelled by a 5.8-liter V8 engine lifted from the Toyota Tundra. Strapped with a TRD supercharger and a wet nitrous system, this Camry punishes the tires with more than 850-horsepower.
This insane creation took only 11 weeks for Toyota to build and it was recently presented at the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. If you are saying that this creation is far from being a Camry, technically you are correct as the only thing it has in common with the typical 2015 Camry is the exterior shell which is literally dropped on the full tube-frame racing chassis.
But it is still an interesting creation nevertheless and with a set of DOT 335/30/18 drag tires, Toyota expects the car to run the quarter mile in about 9.8 seconds.
“This Camry is the ultimate sleeper – it definitely has the element of surprise on its side and more than enough muscle to drop the hammer on any unsuspecting car that pulls up,” said Wade, the Motorsports Technical Centre Director.
