Back in 1966, Ford shook the racing world with the appearance of the GT40 race car. Measuring at only 40 inches or 1.02 meters from the roof to the ground, the GT40 was born to compete against rival Ferrari in the iconic Le Mans endurance race and saw the car winning the race for four consecutive times from 1966 to 1969.

With such an achievement in Ford’s racing history, the rumour of the brand wanting to make a comeback into the infamous endurance racing is not something that one should simply overlook. Aiming to return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016 to mark 50 years since its legendary win with the GT40, it is said that Ford is looking into launching a new GT supercar and compete in the GTE category for production-based cars in Le Mans.

And Le Mans is not the only target for Ford as they would also like to compete in the full season of the World Endurance Championship with a version of their EcoBoost Daytona Prototype, which is currently competing in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. While 2016 will be a nice timing for Ford to return to the sport, entering in 2017 is much wiser as the new regulations will see the LMP2 class of the WEC match up with the Prototype class of the USCC.
