While the world is ogling on the recently-unveiled iPhone 6, we got ours glued in a different direction. Soon to make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, Mercedes had taken the covers off its new AMG GT which they had been teasing us with a very long time.
Despite losing the iconic 6.2-liter AMG engine, the 4.0-liter V8 is not to be underestimated, especially when it is boosted with two turbochargers. Mercedes will be making two variants of the AMG GT; one is the entry-level which comes with 456-horsepower, and the other is a more powerful S version with 503-horsepower.
With both of them paired to a similar seven-speed dual clutch transmission, Mercedes quotes a zerotohundred time of 3.8 seconds for the GT S and a top speed of 311km/h, while the GT is a tad slower with 4.0 seconds from zerotohundred and a top speed of 304km/h.
While it might share the same aluminium structure of the recently-discontinued SLS AMG, the AMG GT is smaller and lighter, and is aimed at cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo, Jaguar’s F-Type and even the upcoming McLaren P13. The AMG GT shares the same width as the SLS AMG, but it is shorter by 92mm and is 37mm taller. Tipping the scales at 1,570kg for the GT S and 1,540kg for the GT, overall weight distribution is 47-percent front and 53-percent rear.
The GT S comes with extra features such as the electronically controlled differential (GT gets mechanical rear differential), AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with three-stage dampening, bigger front brakes, and a wheel setup of 265/35 R 19 at the front and 295/30 R 20 at the rear.
