When Subaru revealed their new 2015 WRX, they made it clear that the car will only be made as a sedan and not as a hatchback anymore. However, the petrolheads over at the States love the hatchback so much that gave the guys in Subaru a second thought in their decision, which resulted in them considering a five-door version of this new WRX.

“We have received strong interest from the US, where hatchback was 50-percent of previous-generation WRX sales, so we’re now considering”, said Masuo Takatsu, the WRX project general manager, at the launch of the WRX sedan in Australia.

“The main target for WRX is the US. Japan is number two, Australia number three. Basically, we target these three markets,” he added.

Takatsu also said that the limited engineering resources are the cause for the absence of a hatchback variant for the new WRX and an automatic version of the WRX STi. While they offer the WRX with a CVT, the STi only comes with a manual transmission.

In Australia however, they are not that enthusiastic about the hatchback as such version have accounted for only up to 15-percent of previous WRX sales, in which some years it had even went below 10-percent. Subaru Australia managing director said that while he “appreciate the so-called hot hatch does reasonably good numbers, WRX has from day one always been predominantly a sedan”.
