If the announcement of Volkswagen making the Polo R excites you, then this might double the adrenaline rush. A few days ago we reported that VW is going to add some fangs to the Polo for some grunt, but the surprise does not stop there. Although the Golf R is already a pretty serious machine, VW is planning to unveil a more extreme version of their new fourth-gen machine.

Apparently this new Golf will be called the R Evo and it will showcase new driveline and lightweight construction, considered for limited production. Scheduled to make an appearance at the Beijing Motor Show in April, it is rumoured that the car will be powered by a pumped up version of the EA888 engine used by the standard Golf R, equipped with a new cylinder head and induction system.

The engineering of this 2.0-liter turbocharged engine has been overseen by VW’s head of engine department, Fritz Eichler. He is also the same individual who was involved in the development of Mercedes-Benz AMG’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 355bhp in the A45 AMG.

Details at this stage are still pretty scarce, but some sources said that Eichler and his team have “boosted reserves from 296bhp to somewhere in the region of 370bhp”. The torque figure is anticipated to be about 332 lb-ft. With the increase in power, the Golf R Evo is also likely to feature stripped out interior and carbon fiber body panels.
