Asia Festival of Speed GT Asia Round 7, Sepang – Frank Yu Takes The Crown!

Over the weekend, Asian Festival Of Speed (AFOS) brought their series of races to Sepang. Among the races that were held at Sepang was the Lotus Cup, Formula Masters, GT Asia, Audi R8 Cup and the Carrera Cup. For this post, we covered the Malaysian leg of GT Asia.

For the Malaysian leg of GT Asia, a total of 20 teams from all over the world took part in this race. Among the cars that were present for the race was a couple of Ferrari 458 GT3s, a few Aston Martin Vantage V12 GT3s, a lone McLaren MP4-12C GT3, a single Nissan GTR GT3 and several Porsche 997 Cup 3.8s. There was also a lone Lotus Evora GTC in the mix, donned in Lotus’s famed black and gold livery.

The first race was held on Saturday, and started at 2:00pm. Day 1 race saw 10 cars suffering from DNFs, either from crashes or mechanical faults. It was also worth noting that Day 1 was very wet, as it was pouring since early morning.

As the skies cleared for the race at 2:00pm, there were 17 cars left competing for the crown. Day 1 race was adrenaline packed, with the #55 Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 spinning out just after turn 1. Furthermore, the #68 Porsche 997 Cup by Modena Motorsports went right into turn 1, and fortunately no major damages were suffered.

At the end of the grueling hour plus of racing, Frank Yu of Craft Bamboo AMR, emerged as the champion. “It was really unexpected to get a win but most of the work was done by Stefan. I am happy for the team!” said Frank. Unfortunately for our local racer, Alex Yoong, he suffered a DNF on lap 15.
