VW takes on the waves with production plans for the Buggy Up! Concept

The Volkswagen Up! is undoubtedly one of the coolest cars around, and although we have yet to see it on our shores – it’s grown from a 3-door to a 5-door, and even gone ‘off-roading’ with a light Crossover iteration. Now, VAG plans to build another version called the Buggy Up! Based on a concept that was presented at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 2011, this up is a reminisce of the 60s’ VW beach buggies which was an absolutely spur in America, California in particular.

News and rumours claim that VW has received a US design application patent for a production version of the Buggy Up!, which should materialise in the near future – at least for the US market. At the moment, the German automaker is still conducting market research to see if the project is viable and if production takes place for this cool vehicle, it’ll be built in limited numbers.

At the moment, we can see that VW is definitely expanding the range of the Up! and over time, we can expect all the Up! concepts shown at launch will eventually materialise. VW studies for the last couple of years on the Up! includes a GTI, a convertible and an SUV based on the same shell, dubbed as the Taigun. An electric version is also in the works to battle heads with cars like the Renault Twizy and Smart electic-drive. The Up! is one of the most highly experimented model, which is an interesting take – following what MINI is also conducting. Nevertheless, this is expected, as VW is famously known to share the same platform with various other models.

The Buggy Up! is indeed very cool, but what we most look forward here at Zerotohundred is the Volkswagen Up! itself making it to our shores. We reckon it would be uber cool in our urban setting and at it’s affordable price, it would be the perfect city car. So Volkswagen, PLEASE BRING IT OVER! And a hot GTI iteration would be the perfect hot-hatch for the enthusiasts..
