The Ferrari 250 GTO Fetches a new Sky-High Price Tag of USD 52 Million!

There is something about classic cars that captures the eye of the beholder; let alone the ones that are rare and produced in limited quantities. And for these special pieces of machineries, collectors have gone to great lengths to acquire them, which of course include offering an absurdly high price tag just to own them.

One of the best examples would be the Ferrari 250 GTO where back in 2012, a private collector had paid a massive amount of USD 35 million (RM 111.91 million) to own an apple-green unit that was once driven by British racing driver Stirling Moss. But that was last year, and the purchase that was made just recently for another one of these rare Ferraris had managed to leave us in awe.

While we could not ascertain the identity of the buyer, car collector Paul Pappalardo from Greenwich, Connecticut is able to confirm that his red 250 GTO was sold at USD 52 million (RM 166.27 million)! Confirmed to Bloomberg News by three specialist traders, the private transaction made between them makes this the 250 GTO the most expensive car ever sold, again.

The car was bought by Pappalardo back in 1974, restored and driven on numerous occasions, which include the 2002 Le Mans Classic. The price is an astounding 49-percent increase from the previous record, and it will be no surprise that it could go higher than that in a few years or so.

Only 39 units of the Ferrari 250 GTO were built, and every single one of them has their own characteristics. With elegant lines derived due to the research done in a wind tunnel, it is powered by a 3.0-liter V12 engine with 300-horsepower mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
