Although Mok Weng Sun only managed to end up in fourth position during qualifying, that is certainly not an indicator for him to miss in taking home the checkered flag. The three-time Malaysian Super Series (MSS) champion later on showed how the game is played in the opening race of the B series by catapulting to the front and blitzing away to victory.
Being one of the support races for the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix, the first race of the MSS GT Class saw an interesting display of both speed and skills from the drivers. Taking advantage of pole sitter Graham Stephenson’s misfortune having temporarily choked his Juno, Mok immediately took the lead as second-placed Frank Yu was also held back due to the choking.
“I would say that I was very lucky at the start. Stephenson clearly had a problem at the rolling start and choked his engine. I stayed outside and just took the opportunity to go ahead. It was quite straight forward after that”, said Mok.
“But, I have to thank the guys and attribute this win to the team crew. The car had some performance issues yesterday; but the guys sorted them out brilliantly and the car today was great”, he added, who is now hopping into the new McLaren MP4-12C GT3 to defend this GT3 Asia title.
Coming in second in the nine-lap battle was Hong Kong’s Frank Yu, followed by Bob Irawan Indrasasana from Indonesia in third. Our own Tunku Hammam however had to settle with a fourth.
In the Sports Production class, Taiwan’s Steven Chian who finished 12th overall took the win with a time of 21 minutes 40.966 seconds. Malaysian Alif Hamdan came in second, followed by Indonesian Sigit Winarta in third.
